If ever the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant will operate again, what do you think
will happen to the community that surrounds them and what are the disadvantages and
advantages to the community itself
Unlike fossil fuel-fired power plants, nuclear reactors do not produce air pollution or
carbon dioxide while operating. However, the processes for mining and refining uranium ore
and making reactor fuel all require large amounts of energy. A major environmental concern
related to nuclear power is the creation of radioactive wastes such as uranium mill tailings,
spent reactor fuel, and other radioactive wastes. These materials can remain radioactive and
dangerous to human health for thousands of years. Radioactive wastes are subject to special
regulations that govern their handling, transportation, storage, and disposal to protect human
health and the environment.
Opening the BNPP will help the country achieve lower electricity prices. Nuclear
plants can lower the costs of electricity to up to P2 per kWh, in comparison with the rates of
coal-fired power plants which can go for as much as P6 kWh.
Nuclear power plants do not emit carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide or nitrogen dioxide
as part of their power generation process, however they do create other environmental issues.
These include the pollution of water from its use in the nuclear energy process and the
generation of radioactive waste.
