Positive psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihályi originated the flow model theory in the 1970s.

The flow model theory defines the mental state of being totally engaged and concentrated on an
activity, which typically results in a sensation of timelessness and satisfaction. This theory has
been used to improve performance and well-being in a variety of disciplines, including education,
sports, and business. According to research, people are more likely to acquire an interest when
their talents, needs, and desires align with the characteristics of a work. This is similar to the
notion of skill-challenge balance. Flow theory links learner interest to emotion and proposes that
some amount of anxiety is required for students to experience flow. (Harsma et al.)
