5 - Color For The Colorblind
5 - Color For The Colorblind
It was an accident at first. Don McPherson made special sunglasses. Th
ese glasses protected doctors during laser surgery. They also made colo
rs look brighter. Doctors started wearing them outside of the operating ro
om. McPherson’s friend wore the glasses and he saw more colors. McPh
erson investigated the possibility of helping colorblind people. He started
EnChroma labs to study colorblindness. They make helpful glasses for c
olorblind people.
We see color because of the “cones” in our eyes. People have three cones:
blue, red, and green. Red and green cones sometimes get too close, and th
ose colors look the same. This is colorblindness. EnChroma glasses filter lig
ht, so the red and green cones get a different light. This helps colorblind peo
ple to see color with these sunglasses. EnChroma also has a color test on t
heir website and now makes indoor and computer glasses too.
