Some people feel that manufacturers and supermarkets have the

responsibility to reduce the amount of packaging of goods. Others argue

that customers should avoid buying goods with a lot of packaging.
Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Overpackaged products = the amount of packaging of goods

Cost trees

Have a responsibility to do sth/for = be responsible for = take/assume responsibility for

It is argued that that factories and suppliers assume responsibility for cutting down on/minimizing the
number of overpackaged products. Others advocate that customers should put a limit on buying these
products. From my perspective, the manufacturers, supermarkets, and end users should join hands to
reduce the goods with a lot pf packaging for the sake of environment.

On the one hand, those are in favor of the intervention of both factories and supply chains point out the
immediate benefits to environment. Because the manufacturers and suppliers are mainly in charge of
packaging process. Therefore, this policy helps to reduce an astronomical amount of over-packaging on
products. In addition, the manufacturers and suppliers should find an alternative for packaging materials
such as plastic bags, and carton boxes which are impulsively increased into the landfills every day. Bags
made from non-degradable materials and recycled boxes, for example, should be advised to make use
of other re-packaging and re-wrapping the products. Another example, an initiative “go green” from
Tesco – a multifunctional company which reduces packaging materials to the minimum which helps not
only reduce production cost but also protect the environment.

On the other hand, the customers play an important role in avoiding buying over-packaged products.
Because they normally believe that the over-packaging process meets the requirements relating to
hygiene and aesthetic appearance. However, it is totally misconception and they should have awareness
of reducing the goods with a lot of packaging in the interest of environment. Had it not been for
customers’ requirements regarding packaging, the manufacturers and supermarkets would not have
stopped over-packaging their products. Therefore, unless the customers do not grasp the importance of
wasting the packaging materials, there will be an increase in plastic waste and carton boxes dumping in
the environment.

In conclusion, if the manufaturers, suppliers and customers do not cooperate/ (made an attempt) to
limit on producing and consuming over-packaged products. The endeavor in reducing goods with a lot of
packaging becomes futile = useless.
