What is Air Quality Monitoring?

• is a process composed of inter-related activities which

include sampling, analysis, data interpretation and reporting
• is generally classified into two types, namely: ambient and
source
ü Ambient Air Quality Monitoring/Ambient Air Sampling
ü Source Emission Testing / Stack Sampling
• is conducted by the use of either manually-operated
instruments or continuous automatic analyzers with
recorders;

Ambient Air Quality Monitoring
Ambient Air Quality is defined by RA 8749 as the general amount of
pollution present in a broad area, and refers to the atmosphere’s average
purity in a broad area as distinguished from discharge measurements
taken at the source of pollution.

Objectives of Ambient Air Sampling
Ø To assess air quality in the area or to check compliance in relation to
the National Ambient Air Quality Guideline Values
Ø Determine exposure and assess effects of air pollution on health,
vegetation or building materials (Taal Ashfall)
Ø Inform the public about air quality and raise awareness
Ø To validate dispersion models (for heavy industries with
dispersion modelling requirement prior to operation)

Air Quality Monitoring Instruments for SO2 and NO2
Ø Tri-Gas Sampler is a wet-chemical system that samples ambient air for up to three different
pollutant gases simultaneously. The Tri-Gas Sampler tests for sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen
dioxide (NO2) and other pollutant gases for which there is a suitable reagent (absorbing
solution).

Water Environment Association of the Philippines, Inc. (WEAP) DENR - Environmental Management Bureau (DENR - EMB)
Air Quality Monitoring Instruments for Particulates

High volume air samplers are used for the collection of

airborne particulate matter in ambient air. They are
available for the collection of Total Suspended
particulates (TSP), particulate matter with an
aerodynamic diameter of less than 10µm
(PM10), particulate matter with an aerodynamic
diameter of less than 2.5µm (PM2.5)

SOURCE EMISSION TESTING
(Stack Sampling)
l Stack sampling or source sampling may be defined as a method of collecting
representative samples of pollutant laden air/gases at the place of origin of
pollutants to determine the total amount of
pollutants emitted into the atmosphere from
a given source in a given time.

S only provides the “snap shot” of the emission

from a source at the time of testing

S a sample is drawn from the stack in

conditions that represent those in the source

Water Environment Association of the Philippines, Inc. (WEAP) DENR - Environmental Management Bureau (DENR - EMB)
Objectives of Stack Sampling:

To determine if the pollutants emitted by the Air Pollution

Source Installations (APSI) are within the standard limits
and in compliance with National Emission Standard for
Source Specific Air Pollutants (NESSAP).
Ø To measure the efficiency of the control equipment by conducting a survey
before and after installation.
Ø To determine the effect on the emission due to changes in raw materials and
processes.
Ø To compare the efficiency of different control equipment for a given condition.

Source test can be divided into 3 categories:
a) Isokinetic Sampling
Øgenerally used for PM
Ømostly for Boilers, Bunker-fired APSI
b) Batch Sampling
Øgenerally used for NOx and CO (gases)
Ømostly for Generator Sets
c) Continuous Automatic Sampling &

Process & Operational data requirements

Prior to the conduct of source test, testing agency should request

the facility operator to provide the following information:
l The operating parameters used to monitor or regulate the processes or
installations that generate the emissions
l The values of this parameter that indicate normal operations
l Details of any associated emission control equipment, including design
capacities & efficiencies
l The output of any CEMs
l They should further advice the operator:
- to ensure that processes are operated at an appropriate load
- to use the same type of fuel
- to use the blend that is expected to produce the highest emissions

The 5 P’s of STACK SAMPLING
Prior Preparation Prevents Poor Performance
The ability of the source testing team to carry out their test
effectively & efficiently will depend on:
l Preparation of equipment & as well as gathering relevant
information
l Second & follow-up source tests will not require pre-test visit if
adequate records exist in previous test.

Equipment Calibration
Equipment Calibration
test results from from a stack emission test are meaningless w/out calibration of the
equipment components
w/out calibration, sampling cannot be verified as having been conducted isokinetically
components w/c require calibration are:
1. Dry Gas Meter & Orifice Tube
2. Thermocouples & Digital Temperature Indicator
3. Pitot Tube
4. Sampling Nozzels
5. Probe Heater Systems.

Source Testing Safety
Safety is an attitude that must instilled in all sample team
members. A variety of hazards must be carefully considered
before beginning a source test.
Hazards which need to be considered are the ff:
lWorking at heights or on a temporary platforms
lExposure to toxic, corrosive or hot gasses
lElectrical hazards
lTrip hazards from cables
lNoise and/or heat from plant equipment
lObjects falling from work platform
lFlammability hazards
lExposure to the elements
