Wave Energy Harnessing Ocean Wave Energy
Wave Energy Icon Wave energy, or simply wave energy, is another rene
wable marine energy source that harnesses ocean wave energy to prod
uce electricity. Unlike tidal energy, which uses the ebb and flow of the tide
s, wave energy uses the vertical movement of surface water to create tidal 
waves.

Wave Energy Converts the periodic up and down motion of ocean wave
s into electrical energy by placing devices on the surface of the ocean th
at capture the energy generated by wave motion and convert this mecha
nical energy into electrical energy.

Wave energy is actually a concentrated form of solar energy produced by 
the action of winds blowing across the surface of the ocean. When the s
un's rays hit the earth's atmosphere, they heat it up.
Temperature differences in air masses around the globe cause air to mov
e from warmer regions to cooler regions, creating winds.

As the wind moves across the surface of the ocean, some of the kinetic e
nergy of the wind is transferred to the water below, creating waves.

In fact, the ocean can be thought of as a vast reservoir of energy, transfe
rred from the sun to the ocean, and the waves carry the kinetic energy tra
nsferred through the surface of the ocean. We can then say that waves a
re actually a form of energy, and it is this energy, not water, that is movin
g across the surface of the ocean.

These waves can travel (or "spread") long distances on the high seas wit
h little loss of energy, but as they approach the shore and the depth of the 
water becomes shallow, they slow down, but their size increases.
