THE BEUTY OF

ICELAND
By Angel Alberto

Iceland is a Nordic island country in the North Atlantic Ocean and in the Arctic Ocean.
Iceland is the most sparsely populated country in Europe, about four fifths of the population
live near the capital Reykjavik and the surrounding coastal areas. The climate of Iceland is
milder in Winter. In Reykjavik, the avarage temperatura in January is 5°C and although winds
and gales are common during this season, thunderstorms are extremly rare.

One of the reasons is such an amazing place is that about half of the island is made up of
volcanoes and a mountainous lava desert. Also has several glaciers and many fjords. It has
more land covered by glaciers than anywhere else in Europe. One of the environment
features is the Great Geyser which spouts hot water to a high of 60 metres or the famous
volcano of Hekla, one of the 200 active volcanoes in the country.

However, the breathtaking experience is the view of the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights,
made up for the state of almost total darkness that occurs when there is only 2 to 3 hours
of daylight per day. This is a spectacular sight which you can admire especially well in Iceland
on cold, clear nights from September to March. The sky lights up with many different
colours caused by the interaction of particles from the sun with the earth's magnetic field.
