Language Arts, Bibliotherapy, Issues Among Young Learners and The Solution

In this new era of teaching, a teacher is urged to develop an explorer mindset that is curious,
responsible, and empowered (Glickley, 2022). This may enhance the quality of the teaching and
learning process to achieve meaningful learning. Experimenting and varying instructional
strategies for teaching are crucial in providing a diverse learning experience to learners. For
example, the improvisation arts encourage pupils to express their creativity and widen their
minds. Thus, a teacher must be ingenious in conducting a lesson. In this writing, we will
examine the introduction of language arts, language arts roles and purposes, multicultural
issues among young learners, the alternative approach of bibliotherapy, and how bibliotherapy
addresses the issues.

The first part of this essay will explore the introduction of language arts; the art of
sharing information (Young, 2022). While language is a manner of communication, the arts
empower people to communicate their ideas and emotions. Together it works, and this mutual
engagement complements each other in the learning process. Language arts encompass
several components; grammar, reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. This range of
skills assists learners in upskilling their proficiency at learning a language. It significantly
highlighted being creative, for instance, pupils can create beautiful artwork to explain vocabulary
instead of a regular worksheet. Hence, songs, role-play and story-telling activities are also
pragmatic to be utilised in the classroom. The goal is to boost the kids' imaginative and artistic
skills in comprehending knowledge. Therefore, they are prepared to explore life outside the
classroom.

The first language arts role highlighted in this essay is it improves intrapersonal and
interpersonal development in learners. The integration of language arts into learning enhances
one's self-regulation ability in managing emotions and behaviour. For example, pupils can
develop empathy by reading a storybook and growing compassion for others. This is because
the arts elicit emotional responses from their viewers (Chiaro, 2022). Moreover, language arts
build social skills that are most useful in group work that requires cooperation, such as
dramatization. The pupils will be able to communicate well and value everyone's contribution,
which results in achievement. The purpose of language arts is also comprising aesthetic
development which will expand their wisdom. The teacher must provide numerous fun activities
to meet their needs. Every child deserves to experience and enjoy the beauty of learning. It is to
arouse the pupil's interest in gaining knowledge. It then teaches them to appreciate multiple
values and different cultures, for instance, through expressing thought activities that allow
learners to vary their perspectives and promote them to think outside the box. Thus, language
arts is the best support for children to develop themselves to cope with any challenges.

Next, one of the multicultural issues among young learners is socioeconomic status
(SES) which affects pupils' quality of life in various ways. It concerns their educational
attainment where low-income students may have less experience and exposure to learning
opportunities including learning materials. In language teaching, we can see the struggle of low
SES students, for example, in reading ability of poor phonological awareness and vocabulary.
Indirectly, it decreases the self-confidence and motivation of students to learn as they
downgrade themselves. It reflects on how the parent-child relationship as the parents are
unable to provide sufficient time, energy, or knowledge on education due to financial pressure.
Parents play a critical role and resource for their children's cognitive development. Children
frequently mimic their parents' speech patterns, which means that if a parent uses bad
language, so will the children (Baron, 2022). Despite endeavours for monetary work, they must
also fulfil their responsibility to the children. Hence, a favourable family relationship and devotion
to attention may result in children showing more enthusiasm for learning and enhancing
academic performance despite their economic status background.
Another multicultural issue among young learners in language arts is language barriers,
especially in English. A multicultural diversity in a classroom comprising pupils from different
beliefs, customs, backgrounds, and cultures. The programme of English as a Second Language
(ESL) comprises language skills to enhance language proficiency for global work opportunities.
However, most students face some difficulty as they struggle to comprehend the language. This
inability to understand each other is the cause of failed communication. Having said that,
learners will then lose interest in learning as they cannot understand the language to picture a
concept of a topic. For example, pupils from very rural areas use strong dialects in their daily
conversation and are not well exposed to the English language. Hence, it will be tough for them
to grasp the lesson briefly. They will then lead to disturbing others to study such as making
noise. Therefore, the teacher is required to solve the language barrier issue by exploring various
ways to keep the interest of students in learning. Multicultural education should be infused
throughout the curriculum to provide suitable atmospheres for all learners.

Then, we will study the alternative approach of bibliotherapy in this part of the essay.
Bibliotherapy is the use of reading materials to help in the resolution of personal issues or for
psychological therapy (Van Der Walt, 2022). On top of that, reading materials could do more
than just convey information, but also move one feelings and emotions; laughter, tears, or
anger. It offers people to discover their feelings and solve any concerns they faced through
reading and writing. This therapy can be done for individuals or in a group. The goal of
bibliotherapy is to help people improve their lives by reading (Gillette, 2022). A poem, short
story, quotes, and blogs are examples of written work than can be used in this therapy. In terms
of learning, it aids children to be wiser and not afraid to open to solve a problem. For instance, it
can be seen through the identification of the character's development in a story, the theme
exposition, and the moral values portrayed in a writing. It allows kids to immerse themselves in
literature to explore the world and give judgments and perspectives.

In addition to the bibliotherapy approach, it acts as the solution to the issues mentioned
above; SES and language barrier. Firstly, this therapy is the best method to encourage children
to create a connection to the character they find relatable to them. Then, several questions are
essential to stimulate their minds regarding the story; "Did anything in the story ever happen to
you?" or "Are you like any of the story's characters?". If they are struggling with life crises or
feeling devalued due to the family's low SES, bibliotherapy provides a way for them to release
the emotional distress. Thus, teachers can also aid through efficient classroom management,
and promote a secure and positive learning atmosphere conducive to learning. It aims to make
the kids feel included in the teaching and learning process and boosts their self-esteem. This
therapy also is a behavioural solution to pupils’ attitudes towards learning who lacks motivation
due to the language barrier. As the book is the richest source of knowledge, it can inculcate
confidence in the reader that they can deal with any circumstance effectively by preparing and
carrying out a strategy (Gumber, 2021). The teacher must support them by providing numerous
teaching materials to increase their learning achievement. Therefore, they can attempt to
develop their proficiency in the learning process. Thus, bibliotherapy benefits learners especially
dealing with oneself.

In conclusion, children need proper guidance to live and learn. Education is necessary
for them as they need to prepare themselves to face bigger challenges in the future. Hence,
they are encouraged to experience various learning opportunities and styles to foster their
mental growth. Thus, the teacher acts as the catalyst for their pupils to achieve meaningful
learning. Finally, they can enhance their critical thinking and problem-solving skills to cope with
any circumstances without hesitation.
