Analytical Chemistry- is a measurement science which depend on:
consisting of a set of powerful ideas and methods •the particular problem
that are useful in all fields of science, engineering, • your expertise
and medicine. • the apparatus or equipment available.
The analyst should be involved in every step.
Two Major Divisions:
1. Qualitative Analytical Chemistry
"Chemical identity/ies in the sample"
2. Quantitative Analytical Chemistry
"Relative amounts of."

sample = representation of the whole

qualitative AC = what
quantitative AC = how much
analyte = chemical identity (ex: acid)

replicates = identical portions of a sample

reagent = a substance or mixture for use in chemical
analysis or other reactions
reagent is consumed in the reaction while solvent is
Quantitative analytical methods not
There are two main measurements:
1.mass or the volume of sample being analyzed Calibration curves are prepared from standards.
2.some quantity proportional to the amount of Unknown concentrations are then determined from
analyte such as mass, volume, intensity of light, or the signal intensity of the sample. Comes from high
electrical charge. purity reagents (95% above)

> Gravimetric methods: the mass of the analyte or standard = KHP standard
some compound chemically related to it is
determined.
> Volumetric methods: the volume of a solution
containing suffcient reagent to react completely
with the analyte is measured.
> Electroanalytical methods: electrical properties
such as potential, current, resistance, and quantity
of electrical charge are measured.
> Spectroscopic methods: the interaction between
electromagnetic radiation and analyte atoms or
molecules or the emission of radiation by analytes is
explored.
> Miscellaneous methods: includes the
measurement of such quantities as mass-to-charge
