Describing sequence

Sometimes we need to describe a sequence of events in chronological (按發生時間順序排列的)

order. To help readers understand the order of events, the following sequence words are often used.

Beginning Middle Ending

Firstly Secondly, thirdly,... Finally

At first Then Eventually
Initially Next Lastly
In the beginning After that Ultimately
To begin with Later In the end

Example

Question:
Suppose you are looking at your watch. Describe how
the image formed on the retina generates vision in
the brain.

Answer:
Initially, the photoreceptors on the retina are stimulated by the light
from the watch. They generate nerve impulses. Then the nerve
impulses travel along the optic nerve to the visual centre in the
cerebrum of the brain. The visual centre finally interprets the nerve
impulses into vision.

Practice

1 Describe how the digested products of lipids are absorbed into the lacteals of the villi in the
small intestine.

Fatty acids and glycerol are the digested products of lipids. In the small intestine, these

digested products (first / then / finally) enter the epithelium of the villi by diffusion.

(Initially / Then / Finally) they recombine into fine lipid droplets in the epithelial cells. The

lipid droplets (initially / then / finally) enter the lacteals of the villi.

2 Describe how the arrival of nerve impulses at the nerve endings of a motor neurone leads to
the contraction of muscle.
