WHITE MATTER FIBERS IN THE CEREBRUM
Projection Fibers
- Originate from the cerebral
cortex, uniting the cortex,
brainstem, and spinal cord 5
Commissural fibers 2
- Connects homologous arts of 1 7
the two hemispheres
- Makes up the corpus callosum
Association fibers 6 4
- Connects different parts of the
cerebral cortex within the same 3
hemisphere

Positioning
Projection fibers: vertically
Commissural fibers: transversely
Association fibers: sagittally

Anterior Corpus Callosum Posterior

WHITE MATTER FIBERS: COMMISSURE AND FORNIX
Commissure: a band of nerve tissue connecting the
hemispheres of the brain, the two sides of the spinal
cord, etc. Commissures are actually decussations
5
Anterior Commissure
- Locate by following the rostrum towards the 2
optic chiasm 1 7
Pineal Gland
- Notice that its stalk is attached dorsally to the PG 4
diencephalon above the superior colliculi 6
Posterior Commissure
3
- In the ventral wall of the pineal stalk
Habenular Commissure
- In the dorsal wall of the pineal stalk
Fornix
- C-shaped bundle of nerve fibers in the brain
that acts as the major output tract of the
hippocampus

SULCI AND FISSURES

Interhemispheric/ Median
Longitudinal Fissure
-separates left and right hemispheres of
the brain

SUPERIOR VIEW
SULCI AND FISSURES
Central Sulcus of Rolando
- Separates frontal lobe and parietal lobe
- Bounded by the precentral and postcentral
gyrus
- Tip on locating: identify the transverse gyri
of the frontal lobe, beside that is the
precentral gyri. The sulcus beside it is the
central sulcus. It is also the only sulcus that
runs from top to bottom.

Lateral Fissure/ Sylvian Fissure

- Separates frontal lobe from temporal lobe

Note: Parieto-occipital sulcus is best appreciated

in the sagittal section
