Tutorial experiment batch reactor

Describe an example of industrial applications other than saponification that utilized

batch reactors in its process. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using batch
reactors in chemical reaction.

One of the industrial applications that utilized batch reactors is fermentation.

Fermentation is a process of breaking down sugar by the enzymes of microorganisms that are
present in an environment where oxygen is not being introduced. Microorganisms such as
bacteria and fungi generally have their own particular set of metabolic genes, which enables
them to generate enzymes capable of degrading a variety of sugar compounds in their own
unique ways. A wide variety of microorganisms, each present in different degree, are
essential to the process of fermentation. The utilization of batch reactor in fermentation could
be explained in the larger scale of fermentation process called batch fermentation. Batch
fermentation requires all substrate and nutrients to be added at once or shortly after
inoculation, in a batch fermentation. While the vessel is left to ferment in a controlled
environment until the desired concentration of the final product is reached. The example of
fermentation process that used batch reactor is fermented beverage.

In every chemical process, it is demanded lots of advance technologies in order to

operate the process in certain field effectively while sustaining the desired products in a great
quality and quantity. The utilization of batch reactor in the chemical process has driven to
many effects about its applicability in various aspects such as the reaction in the equipment.
There are advantages and disadvantages of using batch reactor towards chemical reaction.
The advantages of using batch reactor are it is flexible to handle. The flexibility of this type
of reactor is excellent. it could be operated easily its ability to run many tests at once,
especially when performing laboratory-scale activities with small volumes. Moreover,

While some disadvantages have been indicated that the utilization of batch reactor
does affect the purity of the product. It has limitation while keeping the reaction control as
highly exothermic and fast reaction do occur due to limited heat and mass transfer rate. Other
than that, energy efficiency is also average because the heat is needed at start-up. Despite
extensive surface area and difficulty in heat recovery, energy is wasted. Furthermore,
backmixing is one of the main problem in batch reactor. Backmixed product wastes space.
This raises reaction medium viscosity and provides a barrier between reactant molecules.
Both affect reaction rate negatively.

Write a one-paragraph summary of any journal article that studies chemical reaction in
a batch reactor. The article must have been published within the last 5 years. Explain
on the batch reactor used in the study and its significance to the study done.

Experimental data and simulations for the saponification process in batch reactor were
gained from reaction between Ethyl Acetate and Sodium Hydroxide at STP condition. The
simulation was conducted in order to justify the influence of the agitation on the conversion
of reaction for the batch reactor. A magnetic stirrer was introduced in this experiment. An
equal volume of Sodium Hydroxide and Ethyl Acetate was used for batch experimental. The
initial concentrations of both reactants were remained constant during the study of the
reaction, which continued up to the point when the concentration of the products was
therefore remained steady. The reactants were set close to same temperature before starting
the experiment. The data of the experiment showed the values of the conductivity were
remained constant at the end of the experiment. Other than that, the experiment was
continued with agitation and without agitation to compare the influence of magnetic stirrer.
The data showed that the higher overall conversion based upon variable concentration was
obtained from the reaction of Sodium Hydroxide and Ethyl Acetate without agitation
compared to the in case with agitation. Based on the experiment, it was followed the theory
of conversion where the concentration decreased as the time increases due to consumption
and product formation.
