TRAVEL &
SAFETY
TIPS

India is a country of extreme contrasts in both the landscape and the culture. Although it is
generally safe and millions of visitors come every year without incident, you should exercise
the same precautions as you would in other countries and be mindful of differences in customs
and habits. Some visitors will thrive in the sensory overload, but culture shock can definitely be
expected in this country of one billion people. Here are some tips to note, especially for first-time
visitors.

BEFORE YOU GO

• Check the weather outlook for the time of year you plan to travel, as monsoon
rains may affect your plans and cause flooding near bodies of water.
• Scan or photocopy your passport, visa and travel documents and store them
separately from the originals. Keep digital copies in your email.
• Get travel and medical insurance for the duration of your stay.
• Take it easy when you plot your itinerary, factoring in possible
inconveniences in terms of mobility and traffic congestion.

DURING YOUR TRIP

Courtesy & Customs

• When eating or passing items, it is polite to use the right hand as the left
hand is considered unclean.
• Note that for many places such as shops and temples, removing
footwear is necessary.
• Public display of affection is frowned upon, so please be discreet.
• Try not to lose your cool, especially when bargaining.

General Precautions

• Take extra care when travelling after dark and avoid walking alone at
night.
• Be prepared to lose your sense of personal space during festivals.
• Be vigilant in public places and tourist areas in major cities, especially
during national holidays, when there is a greater risk of a terrorist attack.
Avoid large demonstrations.
• Be careful of new acquaintances and avoid divulging details of your
travel plans.
• Avoid carrying large amounts of money.

Securing Your Belongings

• Do not leave your belongings unattended and use locks for luggage.
• Keep your shoulder bag on the side opposite the road to avoid snatch
theft.

Body & Hygiene

• For your convenience, bring your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer.
• Be aware that henna tattoos may cause skin reactions in some people.
• Wear long, light-coloured, loose clothing and use mosquito repellent in areas where dengue is a risk.
• Make sure beaches are safe for swimming before going into the water.

Eating & Drinking

• Stick to cooked food and steer clear of raw and undercooked food.
• Drink bottled or boiled water and avoid adding ice to your drinks. Check the seal to ensure that bottled water
has not been tampered with. Some tourist establishments may refill your bottle – a more environmentally
friendly way to travel.
• Do not leave drinks unattended and avoid accepting drinks from strangers.

Female Travellers

• Dress modestly, covering your shoulders, legs and cleavage.

• Try to fit in instead of standing out.
• Ignore unwanted attention. Staring, physical contact and further conversation may be misinterpreted.

Mental preparation will help you manage the crowds. If the cities stress you out, head for the
countryside. You will meet all sorts of colourful characters along your journey in the Subcontinent, so
come with an open mind and be ready for the ride.
