Dear Cherry,

I’ve been thinking about what you told me last week about

your plans to get married this summer. I think Martin is a great guy

It’s my opinion that getting married can go both ways. It can

parents divorced a few years ago, so I really know how bad it is if

something goes wrong. Therefore, I guess what comes to my mind

immediately is all the stuff about making a bad marriage decision.

I’ve heard that the younger people are when they get married, the

higher the chance of divorce. That’s probably because they are still

a bit green around the gills. Of course, even if things are relatively

good in your marital relationship, you will still lose a lot of freedom.

You can’t just go out and do anything you want whenever you want

loss of freedom will be compounded many times if you have

children.

My dad told me that he wished he had played the field before

he settled down. He advised me to date a lot of girls before I get

married so that I’ll have a better idea of what kind of girl is suitable

for me. He wants me to make a more-informed decision, just like

shopping for an expensive item. No reasonable person will go out

to buy a house and then buy the first one they see, will they?

Despite all of these rather negative ideas, I’m still optimistic

that a happy marriage is a reachable goal even if you are young. I

sometimes feel sorry for those people who don’t get married until

they are over 30 years old. Some of them will be 50 or 60 years old

before their children finish Form Six. It will be hard for them to

enjoy their children, much less their grandchildren, if they are too

old. If you are looking for a house and you see a fantastic one that

you love, but you keep looking around, then by the time you get

back to it, someone else may have already snapped it up. Then you

will regret not acting sooner. If what you have with Martin is really

wonderful, then why ‘shop around’? Besides, for a lot of people,

‘playing the field’ is just a recipe for heartbreak: they search and

search but never find what they are looking for.
