1. Introduction
Due to the increasing global warming and increasing demand for a shift towards more
sustainable and clean renewable sources of energy. Gasification is a process in which a
feedstock such as coal is partially oxidized in a steam and oxygen lean environment to
produce raw synthesis gas (syngas), a mixture of CH4 , CO2 , CO and H2 . Coal can be fed to
the gasifier in the form of crushed coal of 5 to 50 mm size, coal fines, pulverized coal or coal
water slurry depending upon the generic type of gasification process (i.e., moving bed,
fluidized bed and entrained bed). Based on the targeted application, operation perimeter can
be tuned to get desired quality of syngas. Tata Steel R&D team has developed a fluid bed
rector for high ash coal gasification where different study can be done under different
operating regime.

2. Objective

Experimental and simulation study of high ash coal gasification. This will be carried out in
the following stages: -

a) To study and become proficient in different types of gasifiers and coal samples that
can be used for gasification.
b) To carry out an experimental study on a DOE which includes Coal analysis and Pilot-
scale fluidized bed (FBG) gasification tests with middling and tailings using oxygen
enriched air and steam as the gasification agents.
c) To create an ASPEN simulation study of a fluidized bed gasifier based on literature
data and vitrify the data obtained in the experimental study

3. Methodology
1. Literature study related to gasification in different mode
2. Identification of knowledge gap of various kinds of gasifiers based on available
literature
3. Procurement and preparation of feed samples.
4. Analysis of feed samples
5. Pilot scale experimentation
6. Development of Aspen based model on fluidized bed gasifier
7. Results and discussion
8. Conclusion

4. Project Schedule and Work plan

Period: - 16th January 2023 – 15th May 2023

Work Plan:

1
1. Literature search
2. Learning of Aspen software
3. Experimentation on a fluidized bed gasifier
4. Development of a simulation model of gasifier

5. Expected Outcome
The expected outcome of the internship is: -

1) Understanding gasification process

2) A thorough understanding of the operation of a fluidized bed gasifier.
3) Gaining proficiency in developing ASPEN models
4) Understanding of the important parameters of a gasifier and their significance
5) Understanding of parameters for selection of feed.
