DEGREES OF COMPARISON

1. Positive Degree (as + adjective + as)


We use the as + adjective + as structure in a positive form. It shows that the qualities of people,
animals, and items/objects are the same.
Examples:

• Andi is as polite as his sister


• My bicycle is as old as Edo’s

2. Comparative Degree
A comparative degree is used to compare the qualities of two people, animals, items/objects to
describe differences.
a) Adjectives with one syllable
The suffix -er will be added for comparative adjective (adjective + -er + than)
Example: the pink bottle is older than the black one.

b) Adjectives with two or more syllable


For most two or more syllables adjective, you form the comparative degree with more
or less.

more + adjective + than

less + adjective + than


Examples: This book is more expensive than that book
That book is less interesting than this book
3. Superlative Degree
A superlative degree is used to show something has quality to the greatest or least degree.
a) Adjectives with one syllable
The suffix -est and article ‘the’ will be added for superlative adjectives (the + adjective +
-est)
Example: the pink bottle is the oldest.

b) Adjectives with two or more syllable


For most two or more syllables adjective, you form the superlative degree with the
most or the least.

The most + adjective

The least + adjective

Examples: This book is the most expensive book in stores


That book is the least interesting book in stores
