Comparatives
We use comparative adjectives to
describe qualities of nouns…
Comparative adjectives

The comparative adjectives are used to compare


differences between two objects (larger, smaller,
faster, higher). They are used in sentences where
two nouns are compared, in this pattern:

Noun (subject) + verb + comparative adjective + than + noun (object).


Let’s check some examples:

We use comparative adjectives to make comparisons:

This car is certainly better, but it's much more expensive.

There are two ways to make or to "form“ a
comparative adjective:
Examples:
Smaller
short adjectives: add "-er“ Bigger
Prettier

More modern
long adjectives: use "more" More expensive
More intellectual
There are some exceptions:

Good = better

Well = better

Bad = worse

Far = farther

Superlatives
When more than two nouns are being compared, it’s time to
use superlative adjectives. These are adjectives that refer to the
highest degree of difference between the nouns that are being
compared.

Superlative adjectives

Superlative adjectives are used to describe an object


which is at the upper or lower limit of a quality
(the tallest, the smallest, the fastest, the highest).
They are used in sentences where a subject is
compared to a group of objects.

Noun (subject) + verb + the + superlative adjective


+ noun (object).

When you compare three or more
things, animal or persons or groups
and you want to express superiority
of one of them, you must add –est to
the short adjectives (the adjectives
or adverbs that have one or two
syllables).

You need to know

When you compare three or more things, animals or persons

them; you say or write “the most” before the long adjective
(adjectives or adverbs that have three or more syllables).
