INSTRUCTIONS:
SMALL GROUP WORK (2-4 MEMBERS):
You are to create a digital collage using pictures or images you may access from the internet. Your main
goal is to show the highlights of specific ART ERAS/MOVEMENTS. The collage can also show how
people during the specific era you have chosen, see art as a part of their lives (e.g. Age of Realism). What
particular artworks (musical, visual, architectural, literary) made an impact in the era/movement you have
chosen? In order to accomplish this, you must work on the following:

1. You should have watched the (previous) videos and attended the synchronous lecture when the images
you would want to collect for the collage have been discussed.
2. Choose a movement, era, or culture as the main theme for your art (E.g. Renaissance Art, or Modern
Filipino Visual Art, among others—these are not the only options—you have a plethora of choices).
3. Create the collage (See attached rubric in the Dropbox).
4. Submit a one-page explanation (3-5 paragraphs) describing what the collage is about (INTRO) and why
you have chosen to create it (BODY OF THE TEXT). Submit in an MS WORD file. ATTACH THE
COLLAGE (Saved as .png or .img) in this MS WORD FILE so there will only be ONE SUBMISSION.
5. For SMALL GROUPS, make sure EVERY MEMBER OF THE GROUP SUBMITS IN THE
DROPBOX (i.e. the same output of the entire group).

SURREALISM

INTRODUCTION

The literary and creative art movement known as Surrealism was started in Paris in 1924 by André
Breton. It claimed that the Enlightenment, a significant movement that promoted and emphasized
individualism and reason in the early 17th and 18th centuries, had stifled the superior abilities of the
unconscious, irrational mind. The purpose of Surrealism was to free the mind, language, expression, and
people's human experience from the constricting constraints of rationalism.

Based on our group’s collage above, which is composed of several types of surrealistic artwork, including
paintings, fashion, architecture, interior design, digital art, and furniture, we chose these artworks as a
signifier that art can go beyond one's limitations. These artworks were chosen because they demonstrate
that art can transcend one's constraints. To create something impossible to possible. Surrealism provides
you with the freedom of expression necessary to make your fantasies a reality. This does not restrict you
to a set standard or require you to be logical, because with surrealism you may be illogical; it can be an
out-of-this-world creation, and by doing so, it does not have to be typical, and an artist can be strangely
bizarre in whatever creation he or she envisions. This is why we chose it, as it establishes and conveys a
sense of unique representation just by glancing at it. It is a head-turner because most of the time, the most
strange and improbable collaborations are incorporated into their paintings. In conclusion, it provides a
distinctive perspective on art in which the impossible becomes conceivable in which everything that is
limited can become limitless.

BODY OF THE TEXT

“I try to apply colors like words that shape poems, like notes that shape music”. This quote came from a
popular surrealist artist Joan Miro. This saying paved the way for us to have a deeper sense of
understanding as to what surrealism is all about. It is a fact that some poems and songs might seem what
they are at first glance, but if one really takes the time to digest what the message the song and poem
portrays, that person will discover that there is something more to what is literal, and the same applies to
surrealism art. And that has helped us identify that surrealism does not only apply to paintings but can
also be applied into fashion, interior design, architecture, furniture and fixtures, etc. In addition,
surrealism changed our perception that there is “sense in impracticality” and beauty in fantasies and the
uncanny.

The realm of possibility is expanded when it comes to surrealism as it derives many of its interpretations
and meanings from imagination rather than rational thought. We feel a sense of freedom from surrealism
that we don’t feel in other art styles as they do not have the goal of realizing the creative potential of one’s
mind. This release makes it possible for the artists to express their thoughts and emotions in a wider range
of freedom that it could be applied to things that are not just art. Even politics was deeply impacted by
surrealism either directly through artworks that inspired reform and change in people - and indirectly - by
the constant expression of freeing the mind and liberation from oppressive structures. As with any kind of
art form or art style, surrealism has evolved into something that could revolutionize the human
experience. It has a greater impact on a person’s mind that it could result in drastic changes to their being.
Freeing a person’s imagination and letting their mind wander is something that surrealism aims to do and
this is something that we hope to encourage and empower people to do through this work of ours.
