CHAPTER III

Methods and Procedure of the study

This chapter describes the characteristics and description of the method used in the
research, respondents and local of the study, sample and sampling strategies, research
instruments, statistical data treatment and the analysis of the research.

Method of the Research

This research used descriptive method through the use of survey and observation on
the facts that are available and connected with the study. The researchers prepared
survey questionnaires which were given to 20 respondents in FEATI University students
that taking Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation and Marine Engineering who
have knowledge about the maritime. Each fact obtained from survey was treated with
the same probability and not subdivided to avoid bias on the statistical result.

Locale of the Study

The locale of the study is at FEATI University at Helios Street, Santa Cruz Manila
Philippines. The study is all about the importance of Life-saving Appliances and
Equipment on Board.

Respondents of the Study

The respondents of the study are limited only to the College of Maritime students of
FEATI University.

Sample and Sampling Strategies

As mentioned in the scope of limitation of the study, the researcher made use of
random sampling method on gathering respondent in order to avoid bias data. The
researcher conducted data among 20 respondents based to the Slovin’s formula along
the College of Maritime. The format of the survey is in the form of a checklist of yes or
no. The goal of the survey is to know if our respondents are sharp-witted about the
study.

Research and Data Gathering Instruments

In gathering data, the researchers made used of survey questionnaires.

Throughout the study of awareness of Maritime students in FEATI University in the

Importance of Life-saving Appliances and Equipment on Board, the researchers choose
to disseminate the survey questionnaires to those who have the basic knowledge
relating to the study.

The queries are based on Basic Safety Training, Standards of Training, Certification
and Watchkeeping (SCTW), and other related regulating body where maritime students
are assumed to identify and utilize every single life-saving appliances and equipment on
board.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The responses of the respondents to questionnaire given are gathered and analyzed
using percentage to get the part of an item against the population.

Slovin’s Formula:

In order to know the number of respondents needed in our survey, we use Slovin’s

formula.

n=__N__
1+ Ne2

Where: n= sample size

N= population size

e= margin of error (0.3)

Therefore the number of respondents that will answer our survey based on Slovin’s
formula is limited only in, n = 20/ (1 + 20 x 0.03 2) = 20 respondents. The respondent
chosen for this study are the students from College of Maritime of FEATI University.

CHAPTER IV
PRESENTATION, INTERPRETATION AND ANALYSIS OF DATA

When it comes to sufficiency of the stock of life-saving appliances and

equipment, 90% of the respondents agree that it is a must of buffer in case some of the
materials discovered defective at the time of necessity. While 10% of the respondents
thought it just space consuming and adding extra weight for the ship.

the respondents suggest that proper keeping and handling must exercise in order to
obtain the usefulness of the latter where 5% of the respondents are opposing because it
may incur another expense to pay to whomever personnel in duty.

5.  Does separate storage room for life-saving appliances and equipment

necessary to maintain its best condition?

95% of the respondents consider storage room made only for the life-saving
appliances and equipment for the retention of its quality and easy monitoring of
inventory count. The 5% remaining thinks that there is no need of a room because
bigger container box are enough as storage to minimize space and maintenance cost.

6. If life-saving appliances and equipment are expired, do you think it is still

usable?

5%

Yes No

Most of the respondents strongly disagree that expired life-saving appliances

and equipment are not usable and safe after it expires. Though 5% consider hearsays
like after the date of expiration occurs, it still usable for a month but after it lapse it won’t
be effective anymore.
7. Are all life-saving appliances and equipment expected to be functional,
especially at the time of utilization?

CHAPTER V
FINDINGS, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

FINDINGS

The researchers found out that the Maritime students in FEATI University are aware to
the importance of live-saving appliances and equipment on board.

Maritime students believe that all life-saving appliances and equipment on board are
important especially in emergency situations. The crew and passenger are well trained
or have enough knowledge to effectuate the proper use of every life-saving and
equipments.

The company was obligated to supply its shipping vessels a quality life-saving
appliances and equipment.

We also found out that all life-saving appliances and equipment necessary maintain its
best condition and old life-saving equipment must replace a new one to avoid
malfunction.

CONCLUSION

The proponent concluded that life-saving appliances and equipment on board must be
functional specially in emergency situation or in actual abandoning of ships. All life-
saving equipment and appliances are always usable and maintain to its best condition.
Passengers and crews of ships are well trained to effectuate the proper use of life
saving and equipment on board.

RECOMMENDATION

The researchers highly recommend the following:

A. To the maritime students

 That they need to read a lot or research to learn more about the use of life-saving
appliances and equipment.
 That they need to take basic safety training and other training that involved to
safety of life at sea.
 That they need to be calm in case of emergency situation to avoid wrong
decisions.
B. To the FEATI University
 That they need to add subject related to safety of life at sea or Life-saving
appliances and equipment on board.
