• An environmental resource is any material, service, or

information from the environment that is valuable to

society. This can refer to anything that people find useful
in their environs, or surroundings. Food from plants and
animals, wood for cooking, heating, and building, metals,
coal , and oil are all environmental resources. Clean land,
air, and water are environmental resources, as are the
abilities of land, air, and water to absorb society's waste
products. Heat from the sun, transportation and
recreation in lakes, rivers, and oceans, a beautiful view, or
the discovery of a new species are all environmental
resources.

• Some resources are renewable, or infinite, and some are

non-renewable, or finite. Renewable resources like energy
from the sun are plentiful and will be available for a long
time. Finite resources, like oil and coal, are non-renewable
because once they are extracted from the earth and
burned they cannot be used again. These resources are in
limited supply and need to be used carefully. Many
resources are becoming more and more limited,
especially as population and industrial growth place
increasing pressure on the environment.
• The exploitation of natural resources is the use
of natural resources for economic
growth, sometimes with a negative
connotation of accompanying environmental
degradation. It started to emerge on
an industrial scale in the 19th century as the
extraction and processing of raw materials (such
as in mining, steam power, and machinery)
developed much further than it had in
preindustrial areas. During the 20th
century, energy consumption rapidly increased.
Today, about 80% of the world's energy
consumption is sustained by the extraction
of fossil fuels, which consists
of oil, coal and natural gas.
• Another non-renewable resource that is
exploited by humans is subsoil minerals such as
precious metals that are mainly used in the
production of industrial commodities. Intensive
agriculture is an example of a mode of
production that hinders many aspects of the
natural environment, for example the
degradation of forests in a terrestrial
ecosystem and water pollution in an aquatic
ecosystem. As the world population rises and
economic growth occurs, the depletion of
natural resources influenced by the
unsustainable extraction of raw materials
becomes an increasing concern.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
• EXPLOIT – make full use of and derive benefit
from (a resource).

• EXTRACTION - the action of taking out

something especially using effort or force.
- the act of removing
something.

• UTILIZATION - the action of making practical

use and effective use of something.
How do we exploit our Environmental
Resources?

By Extraction and Utilization

How do we extract and utilize Water
Resources?

We extract water resources by using machineries like water pump for work to
get easier and we utilize them by using them effectively on our daily life.
How do we extract and utilize Wind
Power?

We extract wind power by using wind mill to produce wind energy and as well
as power supply. We utilize it by generating electricity for food production, and
leisure.
How do we extract and utilize Solar
Energy?

We extract solar energy by creating solar panels to generate electricity. We

utilize it by using the electricity effectively.
How do we extract and utilize Land
Resources?

We extract land resources by getting anything that could help us on our daily
living, from food consumption to energy consumption and many others. We
utilize it by using it carefully and effectively.
How do we extract and utilize Animal
Resources?

We extract animal resources by getting eatable meat and clothes from some of
them. We utilize it as one of food source , pets, and others make parts of an
animal as design or jewelleries.
How do we extract and utilize our
Crude oil?

We extract crude oil by using machineries to easily get it from underground .

We utilize it by using it on our engines, fuel and many others that uses crude
oil.
How do we extract and utilize Natural
gas?

We extract natural gas by using machineries . We utilize it by making it into

fuel to meet our needs like cooking our food and many others.
How do we extract and utilize Precious
Metals, Minerals and Rocks ?

We extract precious metals, minerals and rocks by mining and excavation. We

utilize it by making it into construction materials for building, making jewelleries
out of precious minerals and metals and using them for environment and
human beautification.
How do we extract and utilize Forest
Resources?

We extract forest resources by using machineries to cut trees down trees. We

utilize it by using it to make houses, furniture, and many others that could help
us get our life more easier.
