I. Context and Rationale

From pre-school to post-graduate level, English is used as a medium of

education. Every Filipino student is required to learn English. Learners must master all
skills in English, including hearing, speaking, reading, and writing, in order to acquire or
master the language. One of the most crucial language components in learning English
is vocabulary (Nation, 2001). Learning vocabulary can aid students in learning English
and assisting them in acquiring the other aspects of the language. Learning vocabulary
is essential for studying any language, and support them in mastering the other
language components. To increase confidence in communication and cope with
increasing demands and other domains, one must be prepared with a working
understanding of words and their meanings.

Project SMILE : Share, Mentor, Improve, Learn and Excel, desires to enhance
English Vocabulary Skills in Grade six pupils at Huyon-huyon Elementary School,
Tigaon, Camarines Sur. The research design in this study was Classroom Action
Research (CAR).This Action Research was conducted using the mixed method
research which was utilized as a research tool to test the level of vocabulary proficiency
and enhancing vocabulary skills. The subjects were 26 pupils who consist of 15 male
and 11 female of grade six-cactus at Huyon-huyon Elementary School, Tigaon,
Camarines Sur.

Recognizing enough vocabulary will make the students able to communicate and
know. English at least in a simple way because vocabulary is the core of English. It is
the basic thing to communicate and also important for the acquisition process (Krashen,
1981).Vocabulary holds a crucial position in English learning. Without grammar very
little can be conveyed, without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed, it is to know the
explicit and implicit (if any) meaning of a word. Therefore, acquiring an extensive
vocabulary skill in a target language poses a big challenge to students.

Students will be able to communicate and learn more if they have a large
vocabulary. Because vocabulary is at the heart of English, at least in a basic sense. It is
essential for communication and also for the acquisition process (Krashen, 1981: 12).
The importance of vocabulary in English learning cannot be overstated. It is to
know the explicit and implicit (if any) meaning of a word. The majority of kids, however,
have low and restricted vocabulary abilities. It can be observed in the accomplishments
and works of the pupils. As has been noted, vocabularies are limited in writing and
speaking.

As a result, in order to keep up with the demand for English skills, the
researchers want to perform an action research through Project SMILE : Share, Mentor,
Improve, Learn and Excel, must endeavor to develop an effective vocabulary teaching
strategy in Grade six pupils at Huyon-huyon Elementary School, Tigaon, Camarines
Sur. While it is critical for researchers to assist students in learning how to acquire
vocabulary, it is also advised that learners assist themselves in developing their own
vocabularies.
