1. ASSESS
As soon as you encounter a spill and until it is successfully dealt with, you must continually assess the
RISK it poses to people and the environment.
2. DETERMINE
Determine the liquid and quantity on the spill
3. PROTECT
Always wear appropriate PPE to allow you to safely respond to a spill. Check MSDS’s and if in doubt,
assume the WORST and wear highest level of PPE (GLOVES, GOGGLES, ETC).
4. CONTAIN
By containing the spill (using SOCKS), you reduce the area of contamination and lessen the impact to
the environment.
5. STOP THE SOURCE
Once the spill has been contained, stop the SOURCE of the spill. Eg. Roll a drum damaged side up, turn
tap off, plug a hole. NEVER step in a spill.
6. RE-ASSESS
After the spill has been contained and the source controlled, re-assess the situation before starting
clean-up.
7. CLEAN-UP
Use ABSORBENT CUSHIONS or PADS to soak up spill once it is contained and the source is stopped. Use
CUSHIONS or PADS to absorb remaining spills and wipe down area. Treat contaminated material as per
the MSDS of the liquid spilled.
8. DECONTAMINATE
Ensure all personnel who have come in contact with the spill are fully decontaminated. The incident
site, all PPE
And equipment must be fully decontaminated, cleaned or disposed of correctly.
9. REPORT
Fill out an INCIDENT NOTE of the event as per the incident reporting system.
10. REPLENISH
Replace all used spill kit material that you used from spares.
