Assessment Criteria for ASD Cyber Security and Robotics Work Experience

Program
Q1. Currently, at school, I am studying English, Math, French, Business Studies, Sports
Science, and chemistry. These subjects excite me because these subjects will help me get
into the medical field. I am passionate about technology but I also like to get into the
medical field. For school, we have to choose one language, and I have done French, this is
due to its close relationship with the English language, but also due to it being the 5 th most
spoken language in the world. French is also closely related to Spanish and Italian as they
share some similarities. For my sciences, I am studying sports science, which consists mainly
of human anatomy and how exercise affects the human body, I am also doing chemistry as I
have heard it would help me get into the medical field. I have chosen business over
psychology and economics, as I have a little bit of experience with this subject, and I intend
to start my own business later in my life.
Q2. I have quite a lot of experience in the STEM field, especially in technology. I have worked
with coding and robotics, I have used a Raspberry Pi, Arduino, and the Lego EV3
Mindstorms. My passion for robotics started when I joined the robotics club at my school in
grade 6. I had some knowledge in the programming field but had never done robotics
before, and the Lego EV3 Mindstorms robots are the perfect way to start if you are new to
the robotics field. I was part of the robotics soccer team at my school, and later we were
entered into the robocop junior league, in which we made our way into the national level for
robotics. I have experience in 4 coding languages Java, Lua, C#, C++, and python coding, I
also know scratch and Lego Mindstorms Block coding. I have worked on a spinning radar
with an Arduino, with the use of an ultrasonic sensor and a stepper motor. In this project I
did at home, I attached the ultrasonic sensor on top of the stepper motor, and the stepper
motor spun the ultrasonic. The data from the ultrasonic sensor was put into a software
called “Processing” which made a visual of the data collected, like a radar on an actual
airport control tower.
Q3. As I have mentioned above I worked on an EV3 robot that could play soccer. I was in a
team consisting of 2 other members, and I was the designer and coder for the build. This
was our first time ever doing robocop, and it was quite overwhelming. Our first version of
our robot was very basic, it had an IR sensor, which is used to detect the ball that sends out
IR rays, a compass sensor so the robot knew which way to go, and motors to make it move
around. In the regionals competition, we got 1st, and we were able to get some one on one
experience with someone who had a lot of experience with robocop. Before the state
competition, we were able to improve on our robots, especially our goalkeeper robot, to
which we added an IR sensor and a colour sensor so it knew where it was. This helped us
and we were able to get 3rd in the state competition, which meant that we were going to the
nationals competition. Between the state and national competitions, we had some problems
with our compass sensor and had to get rid of it and use a gyro sensor. This was quite a big
change as only one of us had used a gyro sensor before, but we were able to make it work.
In the end, we did quite poorly, but we took it as a learning opportunity and decided we
would do better next year.
Q4. My motivation for this application is to develop my skills in technology and try to pursue
something higher in the technological field. I want to develop my knowledge of things such
as python programming, cybersecurity, etc. In the future, I do want to pursue a career in the
medical field, but I want to go into a career such as radiology or screening. I also would like
to look into cybersecurity careers, as it would be a great field for me to work in.
