GATE CONTROL THEORY
The gate control theory,
proposed by Melzack and
Wall in 1965 and recently
reevaluated, is presently
receiving considerable
attention.

01

This theory explains about a pain-modulating system in

GATE
which a neural gate present in the spinal cord can open
and close thereby modulating the perception of pain.

CONTROL
02

The gate control theory suggests that psychological

factors play a role in the perception of pain.

03

It also suggests that physical pain is not a direct result of

activation of pain receptor neurons, but rather its perception
is modulated by interaction between different neurons.

Therefore, the brain receives messages about injury by way of the gate control system, which is influenced by (1)
injury signals, (2) other types of afferent impulses, and (3) descending control.
