Analogy #1
From my analog essay, I decided to pick a song I was more familiar with, Hey Jude by
The Beatles. From the first glance I had at this song, I depicted almost a friendship or maybe a
relative, giving advice. From even the first opening,” Remember to let her into your heart and
you can start to make it better” (1st verse, 3rd/4th line). Even continuing I couldn’t get rid of the
feeling it was almost friendship which would tie into the philia aspect of Greek love when
comparing to the five love languages I would confidently say words of affirmation, from verse
4,” So let it out and let it in, hey, Jude, begin, you’re waiting for someone to perform with, and
don’t you know that it’s just you”.
During my second overview of the song instead of a friendship, I saw maybe talking to
oneself. Falling under Philautia for Greek love but still going back to words of affirmation,
building one’s confidence and self-up, possibly about to face a trial or a personal block they were
having. This song was written when one of the band mates Julian was upset about a parent’s ugly
divorce, as I have been through one and also seen my parents I relate to the music as just trying
to pick yourself up or even seeing my mother or another rebuild after what had been lost and
broken. I would see it being in the time where you are still just trying to figure out love as a
whole and when witnessing something that was detrimental, could affect how one looks at love.
Many of the fans would be able to relate to this to even what it truly meant about divorce but just
in terms of building self-confidence or giving help to a friend. Fans being able to relate to them
really helped them stay popular even after they stopped preforming while Hey Jude would be
continually played McCartney in live shows.
