Thoughts, Feelings, Emotions

Aimee Cruz
I think music exists to let your feelings and thoughts out in a way that isn’t
violent, or dangerous. Yes, there are other ways to express how you feel like
painting, reading, coloring, drawing, etc. But music is a way of actually saying
how you feel in words that others can relate to, ya dig?
All music types are good in their own way, but the best type is the one
where artists are not afraid of expressing their feelings, thoughts or emotions.
One example of this is Macklemore’s Same Love song. In his song, he
explains how he used to think he was gay as a kid because of how everybody
stereotyped gays at the time. If a guy could draw, he was gay. If he kept his room
really clean, he was gay. He shows how he thought, as a kid, that he was gay
because of all the stereotypes on gay people at the time.
As he grew up, he realized that he actually wasn't gay and that everything
was just a stereotype. He also says how if he w ere gay, he’d think the music genre
of Hip-Hop hates him. Here, he kinda explains how he would feel hated if he
actually were gay.
Like, imagine still being homophobic in 2019??
Macklemore sings about how he feels on the topic of people of the same
gender being together. He talks about how “right wing conservatives” think
being gay is a decision and you can be changed or cured using treatments or
religion. Which, is honestly very ignorant to believe in my opinion.
He also brings up how so many people read the Bible and go by what the
book says but totally forget the part "God loves all his children" and continue to
discriminate people who are anything other than straight.
Here, he expresses his thoughts on how if people are religious and believe
in God, they should listen to what He says in the book and not pick and choose
whatever they wanna hear.
In an article I read about lgbt people, it said approximately 9 million of the
world’s population identifies as LGBT. With around 8 million being adults. Did
you know New Jersey’s population is around 9 million?

This is all just one example of a song where the artist and lyrics express
their thoughts, feelings, and emotions.
I asked 2 friends to tell me an example of a song where the artist expresses
thoughts, feelings, and emotions.
The first person I asked was Alicia. She told me that one song that comes
to mind is Jocelyn Flores by XXXtentacion. She continued to explain how even
though the song sounds very aggressive, he expresses a lot of his feelings on his
friend’s suicide. When he got the call about his friend committing suicide, he
kinda hated himself because he was close to her but couldn’t see the signs that
she needed help.
Few artists talk about their real feelings and their thoughts on certain
issues. I think the best type of music is the one where the artists talk about their
feelings and emotions and XXXtentacion does exactly that in his song.
Another friend, Arizza, gave me an example of an artist that expresses
emotions and feelings, which was Ella Mai’s Trip. She expresses her thoughts by
telling her fans how she truly feels about this one guy. She says, “I tripped on
your love and now I’m addicted.” She explains how she’s trying to control herself
and control her love for this boy so she doesn’t end up heartbroken.
I very strongly believe music was “invented” for a reason. Not just to listen,
you know? Like, if you’re feeling sad you can go to the music that’ll either put
you in a slightly better mood, or make you feel sadder but in a good way. The way
an artist expresses his lyrics can mean a lot to the listener. The emotions,
feelings, and thoughts can all make an impact on how you feel. What do you look
for in a song?
