In Gabi, A Girl in Pieces, Gabi creates a list of goals for herself (“I SWEAR To make this
a better year than last, To be positive, To lose weight…” pages 47-48).

If the main character in your independent reading book was to make this list, what
would be on it? What are their goals?

If the main character in my independent reading book (“Spy x Family”) were to make
this list, their goals would be appearing as a normal family, for their daughter to enter
a prestigious school, to get as close as they can get to their target so they can prevent
their plans for war.

React to the quote above. What does it mean?

This quote means that you are always bound to be influenced by your culture being it
is always around you and you are always seeing and hearing it.

Read the following excerpt from page 35 of Gabi, A Girl in Pieces, then respond to the
prompt that follows.

“People look at Sandra’s king brown hair, dark brown eyes and skin that doesn’t need
sun, and they think how exotic, how perfectly Mexican. Not too much to give discomfort
– there is no accent, no rough transition from white to brown. A perfect attempt at
assimilation, so her brownness can be excused” (Quintero 35).

Using the context in the passage above, define “assimilation” in your own
words.

Assimilation means being perfect or being the way that others want you.

this song is about?

I think this song is about someone who really likes someone else and is happy with
the things about them but they can’t tell the person they like anything about
themselves in fear that this person will deceive them.

What is the mood of this song? How do you know?

The mood of this song is a bit of romance and sadness and I believe this because the
song starts with saying how the person found someone who makes them happy but
they also don’t want to be betrayed by them so they don’t trust them fully.

The point- of view used in “Spy x family” is 1st person.

What impact does the narration style have on your independent reading book?

The narration style allows the reader to follow along with the main character and see
their actions and thoughts. The readers get to see their wants and it’s like the
character is the one telling the story.
