Münchner Christkindl-
markt on Marienplatz
The Himmelswerkstatt (“Heavenly Workshop”) is a craft work-
shop for children age 6-12. The little ones can even dress up as
angels if they like. The workshop will be held every day at
TIP! Munich Town Hall from November 24 to December 11 from
2.30 pm to 4 pm and 4.30 pm to 6 pm. Admission is free.

markets, this is the
original
A stroll through the traditional market in the
heart of the city is simply a must in the run-up
to Christmas. After all, you can’t miss out on
that absolutely gorgeous bauble to complete
your tree decoration, and the flock of sheep
around your nativity scene is in urgent need
of some additions, too. Quite apart from the 1
fact that mulled wine and bratwurst are just
so much more delicious when savoured in November 21, 2022 to
the crispy winter air. This traditional market December 24, 2022
with roots dating back to the 14th century is Venue: On Marienplatz
considered the original among Munich’s (main square) and in
Christmas markets. Set against the romantic the Fußgängerzone
backdrop of the neo-Gothic Town Hall on Ma- (pedestrian zone)
rienplatz, its neat rows of stalls convey a his-

ses. The market not only offers a vibrant show Mon-Sat 10 am – 9 pm,
of traditional customs and crafts, it also has Sun 10 am – 8 pm,

Kripperlmarkt was held in Munich for the first
time as long ago as 1757.
At the Krampuslauf (traditional Krampus run)
across the Christmas market, there’s no need
to be afraid of the creepy creatures and shag-
gy-looking fellows. Live Bavarian parlour
music from the Town Hall balcony featuring
wind instruments, singers and choirs will set
the mood for the Advent season, starting at
5.30 pm from Sunday to Thursday.

Winter Festival – a
feast for the senses
Tollwood – Munich’s big festival of culture
– once again offers a fantastic Christmas
market this winter: featuring music and
performances, international arts and crafts,
and organic delicacies from all over the
world.
At the Grand Chapiteau, the Canadian
company Machine de Cirque performs its
programme of artistic acrobatics, a dash
of poetry and a good dose of humour. The
whole thing is accompanied by a four-
course menu in organic quality – created
by Holger Stromberg, Germany’s youngest
award-winning chef, aged just 23.
The Markt der Ideen (“Market of Ideas”)
has the perfect Christmas gift for everyone
and the Food Plaza offers excellent fare,
while the Hexenkessel (“Witches’
Cauldron”) is the place to be for a rocking
Advent. For the first time, there will be a
curling rink, while a Zauberwald (“Magic
Forest”) also beckons with glittering
sculptures.
Anyone wanting to round off 2022 with
something special can either celebrate in
style with artistry and organic food at the
Tollwood New Year’s Eve Gala or enjoy live
music and DJs at the legendary New Year’s
Eve Party.

Christmas Lights and Magic –

a guided tour of Munich in the
festive season
Don’t forget your hat, scarf and gloves – and off we go! The
guided tour of the Munich Christkindlmarkt starts with a “hea-
venly” ascent to the viewing platform on the Rathausturm
(Town Hall Tower). From there you have a wonderful view of
all the little rows of stands in front of the Neues Rathaus (New
Town Hall). And then it’s off into the heart of the festive action.
On Marienplatz, a Christmas tree as tall as a house with countless
lamps provides atmospheric lighting and moments of reflection,
while the numerous stalls on the square offer hot drinks as well as
all kinds of delicacies and inspiration for Christmas presents.
Our guides can tell you about the history of the city’s oldest
Christmas market, whose roots go back to the 14th century.
They are also very familiar with Munich’s Christmas traditions.
In conversation with the stall vendors you will find out just how
much passion and craftsmanship goes into the products, and at
the end of the tour there’s a free treat of roasted almonds and
mulled wine for everyone!

Humour in Bethlehem?
The Bayerisches Nationalmuseum in Munich owns the most
artistically valuable and extensive collection of nativity scenes
in the world. We talked to curator Thomas Schindler about the
collection’s humorous, bizarre and true-to-life details.
Do you have a favourite nativity scene, Mr Schindler?
My favourite nativity scene is the one made of paper from
Bohemia, which is made of more than a thousand elements.
It has a wealth of surprising humorous allusions.

Humour in the Christmas Story at Bethlehem?
That’s not really what you’d expect ...
These were intended as an incentive for children to take a partic-
ularly closely look. Certain humorous elements were hidden in
a lot of nativity scenes. In Naples it’s the caccone – a man who
is bent over somewhere, going about his bathroom business. In
the Munich nativity scenes it’s often a dog answering the call of
nature, and in the Bohemian paper crib it’s the cows doing their
cow pats. All this may seem a bit crude, but it was considered
entirely natural. The child who found the figure was the first to
receive a small gift.
The Neapolitan crib scenes are particularly rich in detail...
In fact there’s even a name for the particularly detailed style –
finimenti. This means that the figures are designed down to the
smallest detail so they appear very true to life, such as the Ne-
apolitan butcher amidst pork sides and chains of sausages, or
the distinguished lady, recognisable by her numerous brooches,
necklaces and bracelets, and her counterpart, the poor fisher-
man in a torn shirt and smoking a pipe.

Are there particularly distinctive features in the Munich
nativity scenes, too?
Animals appear in the Munich nativity scenes that we’re not
normally familiar with from nativity scenes, such as fighting
bulls and fish. Here, the Christmas story even includes people
completely covered in hair and fantasy creatures.

Do you exhibit modern nativity scenes, too?
Yes, take a look at the more than eight-metre-wide nativity
scene by well-known Munich graphic artist Walter Tafelmeier
from the end of the 1960s. It’s highly reminiscent of the cover
of the Beatles album Yellow Submarine!

Munich and the Wallberg (1722 m)

This easy summit hike is rewarded with a panoramic view of
the Bavarian Alpine foothills and Lake Tegernsee. Germany’s
surrounding area longest toboggan run (6.5 km) goes from the Wallbergbahn
mountain station down into the valley. The descent is quite fast,
so it’s a good idea to wear a helmet. Toboggans can be rented
