Assignment (2)

1) What is the vertical stress at point A of figure below for the two loads, P1 and P2?

2) A four concentrated forces are located at corners of a rectangular area with

dimensions 8 m by 6 m as shown in figure in the next slide. Compute the
vertical stress at points A and B, which are located on the lines A – A’, B – B’
at depth of 4 m below the ground surface.

3- Calculate the vertical stresses at points A and B of the shown foundation
due to the shown truck loads.

4- Figure (1) shows a plan of a foundation known that q= 15 t/m2, Determine:

a. Stress under point A at depth = 4 m.
b. Stress under point B at depth = 10 m.
c. Stress under point C at depth = 6 m.
d. Stress under point D at depth = 3 m.
e. If the whole foundation transmits a "q" pressure. Use Graphs, Newmark's
chart and the approximate (2:1) method to re-calculate (c) and compare your
results.

6- The figure shows a new building which exerts a stress of 2 kg/cm at foundation
level. Calculate the increase of stress due to the new construction at the centre line of the
shown clay layer under points A, B, C and D. Assume that the soil is a semi-infinite
homogenous isotropic elastic media.

7- Two buildings are to be constructed as shown in figure. The stresses at foundation
level are given. Find the increase of stress at the center line of the shown clay layer
below points A, B, C and D due to the construction of both buildings. Assume that
the foundations are flexible, and that the soil isa semi-infinite elastic media.

8- The figure shows a building exerting a stress of 1.2 kg/cm at the foundation of its

higher part, and a stress of 0.7 kg/cm at the foundation of its lower part. Find
the stress increase at the center line of the shown clay layer below points A, B, C
and D, due to the building loads.

9- Calculate the stresses below points A, B, C, D and E at the centre
line of the clay layer due the shown construction.

10- A column load of 2000 kN is supported a (3 m x 4 m) footing whose

bottom is 1m below the surface. Assuming that the footing distributes uniform
pressure. Determine the vertical stress at depth 4 m at a point:
a. Under center of the footing.
b. Under one of the corne
