Worksheet 2.

1 How does light affect

plant growth?
Growth is one of the characteristics of all living things. You are going to investigate how light
affects the way that bean plants grow.
1 Put some soil or compost into two pots. Add the same volume of water to each pot.
2 Plant two bean seeds in each pot.
3 Leave both pots in a warm place until the beans have started to grow. When you water them,
make sure you give the same volume of water to each pot.
4 When the bean shoots are starting to appear above the soil, put one of the pots into a dark
cupboard. Leave the other pot in the light. Try to make sure that everything else is the same
for both pots.
5 Observe the bean plants each day for at least one week. Record your observations in a results
chart, in the space below. You could record:
• the height of each plant • the colour of each plant • the sizes of the leaves

Worksheet 2.1

6 After one week, make a large, labelled drawing of the plant that has been kept in the light, and
another drawing of the plant that has been kept in the dark. Your labels should point out the
differences between the two plants.
