CONTEMPORARY VERNACULAR

ARCHITECTURE

PEARL ACADEMY OF FASHION

-BY MORPHOGENESIS
WHAT IS CONTEMPORARY VERNACULAR?

 Contemporary architecture is the architecture of the 21st century.

 Contemporary architects work in several different styles, from postmodernism, high-tech architecture and
new interpretations of traditional architecture to highly conceptual forms and designs, resembling sculpture
on an enormous scale.
 One of the most common contemporary architecture characteristics is a rejection of straight and harsh
lines in favor of more curved and clean lines.
 No single style is dominant in this architecture

PEARL ACADEMY OF FASHION

• THE PEARL ACADEMY OF FASHION ,JAIPUR IS A CAMPUS WHICH VIRTUE OF ITS DESIGN IS
GEARED TOWARDS CREATING AN ENVIRONMENTALLY PASSSIVE HABITAT.

• THE INSTITUTE CREATES HIGHLY INTERACTIVE SPACES TO WORK IN MULTIFUNCTIONAL

ZONES WHICH BLENDS INDOOR WITH THE OUTDOOR SEAMLESSLY.

• IT IS LOCATED IN HOT ,DRY DESERT TYPE CLIMATE.

• HIGH USE OF DOUBLE SKIN IS DONE. IT ACT AS A THERMAL BUFFER BETWEEN BUILDING
AND THE SURROUNDING.

• THE MATERIAL USED IN THE BUILDING ARE A MIX OF LOCAL STONES , STEEL , GLASS AND
CONCRETE CHOSEN KEEPING IN MIND THE CLIMATIC NEED OF THE REGION.
PEARL ACADEMY OF FASHION

• The building is a confluence of contemporary architecture with sustainable traditional architectural

elements of the region.
•It's a low cost, environmentally sensitive building that has efficiently addressed the challenges of adverse
climatic condition.
•The adopted passive cooling modules in the design reduce the inside temperature by 20°C.The entire
building is raised above ground enabling sucking air patterns with an upward drift through the open air
courtyard .
•A large stepped well (baouli) in the centre lowers the air temperature that enters under the belly of the
building.
The double wall acts as a thermal buffer between the building and surrounding. The outer perforated walls
(aali) at 4 feet distant from themain building reduce the direct heat gain and allow diffused daylight
• Local stone, steel, glass and concrete are the material used to accomplish the progressive design intent.
DISTRIBUTION OF SPACES:

•THE SPACE DISTRIBUTION IS VERY EFFICIENT IN THE BUILDING.

• PUBLIC INTERACTION SPACE IS LOCATED NEAR THE WATERBODY BY WHICH THE SPACES
REMAIN COOL
• EDUCATIONAL SPACE ARE CLOSE TO THE LIBRARY AND AUDITORIUM FOR PROPER DISPLAY AND
CONVENIENCE IN ACTIVITIES.
• THE STRUCTURE IS DEPENDENT ON STACK AS WELL AS EVAPORATIVE COOLING SYSTEM WHICH
MAKES IT VERY EFFICIENT.
PROPER CIRCULATION TAKES PLACE IN
FEATURES
Evaporative Cooling
• The entire building is raised above the ground and a scooped out under belly forms a natural thermal sink
which is cooled by water bodies through evaporative cooling. The underbelly is a microclimate generator, and
the step well section cools the building from within and the air coming inside.

Courtyard sand Stepwells

• The scheme relies on self-shading sliver courts to keep the solar ingress out and control the temperatures of
internal spaces and open stepped wells while allowing for sufficient day lighting inside studios and
classrooms.

Ventilation and Structural grid

• The courtyards get indirect light into classrooms and helps in the creation of naturally ventilated and lit
singly- loaded corridors. The entire building is on a 9m grid, single bay, naturally lit and cross-ventilated. The
configuration of this grid allows for day lighting, ventilation and alongwith a flexible system of partitioning for
the years to come
