Some people think that all university students should study whatever they

like. Others believe that they should only be allowed to study subjects that
will be useful in the future, such as those related to science and
technology. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

There are many arguments between different opinions about what kind of
subjects should students choose in universities. Some people think it depends
on preference and some are in favor of usefulness. In fact, the voice of heart is
definitely the key role in the process of choosing subjects.
On one hand, we can not deny the truth that practical skills are essential in
modern society and the best way to improve this kind of skills is studying
subjects called “useful majors”, such as business, technology, laws and so on.
These subjects can help students to form advanced priority when they need to
show themselves in competition in the future, but still not enough to help a
teenager to be a “Real Man”. As Maslow’s theory of needs shows, a “Real Man”
needs not only material rewards such as practical work and well-paid salary,
but also needs spiritual fulfilment. For instance, a student who can enjoy
subjects may fells happier and performs better than students who chose same
subjects under the pressure of getting practical skills. So we can draw a
conclusion that choosing subjects only related to useful skills is not a suitable
opinion for college students.
On the other hand, if students can study subjects according to their personal
preference, it will be easier for them to get improvements in study life. As an
old Greece saying: “Interests is the best teacher for a student” shows, students,
especially students at young age will spare their efforts on studying once they
can choose different subjects with their own desire. Although they may face the
problem of finding jobs in the future, as theory of needs shows, they have more
chance to success in areas which they really enjoy. It is also beneficial for the
whole society because people with different kinds of skills can fulfill different
needs in various parts of society, which is a balanced-wining construction of
education.
In conclusion, I agree with the idea that assisting students choose subjects with
their own interests and needs. Selecting subjects only according to whether it is
useful is not fair. Actually, all of us have our own rights to determine what kind
of subjects should we chose and what kind of people we want to be.
