● Ages is a sub-topic of Ratio and proportion.

If the current age of a person be A, then

age after n years or n years hence A+n

age n years ago A–n

n times the age nA

● If ages are in ratio A: B, then A : B will be AX and BX

Example:
The sum of the ages of A and B is 35 yrs. and the ratio of their age is 3:4 respectively, then
what is the age of B?
Solution:

𝑅𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜 𝑜𝑓 𝐵
Age of B = 𝑆𝑢𝑚 𝑜𝑓 𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜 × sum of ages

Thus, the age of B is 20 years.

Example:
P is twice as old as his friend Q. Q is 4 years older than W. In 4 years, P will be three times as
old as W. How old is Q now?
Solution:

Let x be the Q’s present age. Add 4 to get the age in 4 years.

Present age Age in 4yrs

P 2x 2x+4

Q x x+4

W x-4 x-5+4

In 5 years, P will be three times as old as W

2x +4 = 3(x-4+4)
2x + 4 = 3x
x =4

 Cheat Sheet – Ages
The age of Q is 4 years

Example:
Anu’s age 5 year ago was 7 times the age of her daughter. At present her age is six times
that of her daughter. What is the present age of her daughter?
Solution:
Conventional method:
Let the present age of daughter be x
Then, the present age of anu = 6x yrs.
5 year ago,
The age of daughter = x–5
The age of Anu = 6x–5
According to the question:
7(x-5) = 6x – 5
7x -35 = 6x – 5
7x-6x = 35-5
x = 30
Present age of her daughter = 30 years
Shortcut:
𝑇1(𝑥−1)
Daughter’s age = 𝑥−𝑦
Where,
T1 = years earlier
x= number of times anu’s age T1 years ago

= 1
= 30 years

Important Points:
1. Assume unknown age by some variable like x.
2. Convert the statement in the question into a mathematical equation
3. Solve the equation and obtain the value, the value must satisfy the condition given in
the question

SOLUTIONS:
1. Option – C
Given,
6 years hence ratio of ages of Kamal and Komal = 5:7
Let, 6 years hence, age of Kamal= 5x and Gopal = 7x
So,
Present age of Kamal = 5x-6
Present age of Komal = 7x-6
Sum of present ages of Kamal and Komal = 60
(5x-6) + (7x-6) = 60
12x = 48
x=4
Present age of Kamal = 5x-6 = 5(4) – 6 = 14 years

Let five years ago the age of Anamika and Bhuwan are 5x and 8x resp.
then,
(5x+5) + 4 = 30
(8x+5) + 4 45
(5x+9) 45 = (8x+9) 30
(5x+9) 3 = (8x+9) 2
15x +27 = 16x +18
x=9
Bhuwan’s Present age = 8x = 8 X 9 =72

3. Option – A
Let’s Shobit and vikram age be x and y respectively
According to the question,
x = y +28 -- (i)
Seven year hence,
x +7 = 3(y+7) – (ii)
After solving (i) and (ii)
2y = 14
Y =7
Therefore, Vikram’s age was 7 years at that time

4. Option – D
Let the present age of Ankita and her sister be 4x and 6x respectively

(4x- 12) = 1/3 (6x-12)
3 (4x- 12) = (6x-12)
12x – 36 = 6x -12

5. Option— B
Let the age before 12 years = x
According to the question,
130x = x+12

13x = x+12

13x = 10x +120
3x =120
x=40
Present age = x+12 = 40+12 = 52 years
