Summary of the Article:

The purpose of the research study is to estimate the incidence of surgical site infection in general
surgeries at a large Brazilian hospital while identifying risk factors and prevalent microorganisms. To
collect research samples the team conducted a nonconcurrent cohort study with 16,882 information of
patients undergoing general surgery from 2008 to 2011. The samples results show that the incidence of
surgical site infection was 3.4%. The risk factors associated with surgical site infection were length of
preoperative hospital stay more than 24 hours, long duration of surgery, wound cleaning resources
being contaminated and dirty/infected.

As a result, the team found out that the incidence was lower than that found in the national studies on
general surgeries. These risk factors corroborate those presented by the National Nosocomial Infection
Surveillance System Risk Index, by the addition of the length of preoperative hospital stay. The
identification of the actual incidence of surgical site infection in general surgeries and associated risk
factors may support the actions of the health team in order to minimize the complications caused by
surgical site infection.

III. Implication/ Importance:

1. Importance to Nursing Practice:

This research would help nurses be aware of the risk factors causing infection on the surgical site of
patients and which would drive them to be aware on how to prevent those factors from causing harm to
their current or future patients. Therefore, it would boost and enhance the performance of nurses in a
hospital setting in terms of sanitation and conducting effective wound cleaning.

2. Importance to Nursing Research:

The study conducted would be a stepping stone and foundation for future related nursing research. It
would serve as a basis to support future conclusions and solutions offered by our current or future
nursing researchers. Also, it would help students such as ourselves to serve as an example and reference
while we study, learn, and conduct our very own research

3. Importance to Nursing Education:

It would be an additional factual and scientifically proven information to be added on Nursing Education.
For nursing students such as myself, it would definitely help spread information and awareness
regarding the common risk factors causing surgical site infection and it would drive us to make efforts to
prevent these factors. Personally, because of reading this article I would be more observant of the
materials I use when cleaning a patient’s wound and to always remember proper hand sanitation and
hygiene and the proper use of sterilized gloves.
