Sports can be an extraordinary tool to and social] development. Realising the unique potenti communication tool, the Olympic values education programme is a practical set of learning resources designed to inspire and allow young persons to experience life values such as achieve peace, holistic education of sports as an educational and excellence, respect and friendship For proper understanding of Olympics, it would be better to study it under the following heads: * Ancient Olympic Games * Modern OlympicGames Ancient Olympic Games When and how did the ancient Olympic Games begin? There is no authentic information or definite fact about their origin, but there are various tales about the origin of these games in ancient Greek stories. According to the available information in history, the first ancient Olympic Games started in Olympia Valley in 776 BCE. It is believed that the natives of Olympia adored Zeus as their God. Once Zeus appeared on the ground of Olympia. Owing to his fearful anger, the land split. Then to pacify Zeus, people constructed a magnificent temple in the valley and started the tradition of offering sacrifice. Later on, Hercules, the son of Zeus, started the games and sports in the honour of his father. Ouympic Wave Epucation According to another story, Augeas, th of Elis, gave the responsibility to clean the vast stables asa punishment to Hercules for his misdeeds, Hercules placed a condition before King Augeas that if he completes his punishment ng well as keep his promise, then King Augens will have to give 10th part of his animal property. The king agreed, Hercules succeeded in turning the flow af the Alpheus River towards the stables and automatically the stables became clean. But, the king did not keep his word, After that Hercules killed King Ancient Olympic Games arena Augeas and became the king. Hercules decided ‘to pay penance for the crime committed and he organised Olympic Games for the first time, Another interesting tale is prevalent about the origin of ancient Olympic Games. The Greeks listen to it with keen interest. According to it, on the banks of the Alpheus River, there was a well-established kingdom named Elis. Hippodamia, the daughter of King Oenomaus, was extraordinarily beautiful. For her marriage, the king placed a condition. According to this condition, she was lo be married to the person who would be able to kidnap her. Thirteen youths one by one tried to kidnap her, but failed. All the youths were murdered mercilessly by the king, After that a youth named Pelops came from Elis. He was a cunning and brave young man in comparison to other youths. He made the charioteer his intimate friend and made him remove the axle from the chariot of the king before the beginning of the race. Pelops along with Hippodamia started running his chariot; the king followed him in his chariot. When the king's chariot was about to reach the chariot of Pelops, his chariot’s wheel came off. Not only was his chariot broken into pieces but his neck was alan cut. Thus, Pelops not only got Hippodamia but also the kingdom, It is said that co commemorate his dual success, Pelops started these games with religious rituals. According to another story, wrestling took place between the Gods and Goddesses to a their rights on this earth, This wrestling took place between Zeus and Koronos in which, Zeus became the winner. Tocelebrate the victory, the games and sports were started. Same historians hold the view that Greece was divided into small states which were called ‘city states’. Owing to mutual battles among these small states, Olympic Games originated. Whatever the reason behind the beginning of Olympic Games was, itis certain that these games were organised first time in the beautiful valley named ‘Olympia’. Therefore, these games were called Olympic Games. The ancient Olympic Games continued for approximately one thousand years. But in 394 CE, Theodosius, the Kingof Rome, stopped the ancient Olympic Games. Stadiums were destroyed. But even after that the memory of these games remained in the hearts of the natives. They could not forget these games even a any centuries. waswat Hearn anp Prysical Enucarion-X1 Rules for Competitions When the Olympic Games were organised in 776 BCE, certain rules were framed for competitors of various sports competitions, which were engravedon abronze plate. These gules are given below 1. The competitor must be only a Greek, completely from a Hellenic race and must be physically fit 2. Savages and punished persons were not allowed to participatein these games. 3. The competitor had to stay in Olympia for one month before the beginning of Olympic Games. For participation in games, participants had to practise for one month. €. Only amateursportspersonscould participate in these gamesand not the professionals. Opening Ceremony of Games On the day of the opening ceremony, all the players, their brothers, fathers and trainers used to assemble in the auditorium, The expert of sports and games made them to take the oath that they would participate in the games according to rules and they had got the training of ten months. After that, a pig was killed and offered to the God named Zeus Harikos. After this ritual, one by one, all the players used to come out of the sports arena. Exactly at that time, the players were introduced to the spectators. If one of the spectators had any objection against any player, he was not allowed to participate in the competitions Rest of the players, who faced no objection against them, were allowed to participate. After that the declaration was made tostart the games. With the passage of time the number of games kept on changing, such as 400 yard walking was included in 724 BCE, Three miles race was included in 720 BCE, pentathlon in 708 BCE, boxing in 688 BCE and horse-race was included in 648 BCE. The number of games increased over the years and consequently the games used to be organised for five days. On the first day, only religious functions were performed. The second day was reserved for march past and introduction and after that chariot-race, horse-race and pentathlon were held. In the morning of third day the ritual of sacrifice of animals was performed, After that, competitions of races, wrestling and boxing were held. The fourth day was fixed for athletic events, wrestling and boxing. And on the fifth day recreational programmes were organiaed. Awards Less attention was paid to awards in the ancient Olympic Games. Only foodgrains and animals were given as a reward. After that, acrown made of olive leaves was given to the winners. More stress was laid on respect and honour, instead of awards, to the players in these games, Statues were also made of the winners. Poems were also composed in praise of winners and thgjanames were recorded in the annals of history. Even the players used yames for respect and honour and not for the sake of awards. ‘Ouymric Vatue Epucation Modern Olympic Games The credit to start the moder Olympic Crom goes to Pierre. Olympic Ideals Olympic Games are remembered for the Bishop Pennsylvania's famous sermon, "The important thing in Olympics is not to win, but to take part. The important thing in life is not the triumph, but struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well Objectives of Olympics According to Coubertin, following objectives can be achieved through Olympic Games 1. To pay attention towards physical education and sports competition: e is in all t countries of the world. mall the 2, To develop personality character, citizenship qualities and health among the youths. 3. Formation of good habits among sportspersons go that they prosperous life 4. So he put his strenuous efforts to start the Olympic Games. In fact, the following valuescan be developed through Olympiam Friendship ‘The Olympism provides many opportunities to develop friendship not only among the participants hut among the nations alse, When Olympic Games are held, the participants yer close © one another, They become friends. The nations that have tense relations iso come elosor. China is one of the examples. Due to ping-pong diplomacy’ it started ta participate in Olympic Games after a long gap. S to develop friendship. Solidarity ‘The Olympiam also provides ample opportunities to enhance solidarity. It gives a feeling of protherhaod and unity among various nations. Il creates cohesion among the participants Olympicm provides ample opportunities us nations Fair Play Up to some extent, it can be said that Olympic Games enhance the chances of fair play. Fair play is based on justice. There should be justice for each player as well as the team. ‘There should not be any favour or inclination towards a team. Rules and regulation must be npplied fairly to each team. But in fact, there is a big gap between words and acti of the officials. Nowadays every team wants ta win by hook or by crook, The slogans like: ‘stay out for sports and stay out of courts’and ‘live by code or get out’ have become useless as these aire not followed in practice, Therefore, it can be said that the Olympism in this, respect isnot as successful as it should have been Free from Discrimination In the last objectives of modern Olympic Games, it is said that there will be no discrimination on the basis of caste, race and religion. So. the Olympism lays duwn enough stress on this aspect, That is why up to some extent, Olympic Games are free from discrimination. At such an event, here is no meaning of caste. race, religion or community. Though exceptions are always there, It happened during 1972 Munich Olympic Games when 11 players of Israel were murdered ruthlessly. Hacial difference was seen during 1936 Berlin Olympics when Adolf Hitler refused to honour Jesse Owens, the African-American athlete who got four gold medalsin thut Olympic games. Abaut the values, such as friendship, solidarity, fair play and free from discrimination, it can be said that the Olympism plays a significant role in the development of these values. But there is also a negative aspect of Olympic (lames, which is also rampant. It seems that the dreams of Baron de Coubertin are not going to be fulfilled. Countries have their own nterests. Some of the countries take part in the Olympic Games just to prove that they are on the top and far better than other countries. These values suffered a setback when some countries of the world boycotted 1980 Moscow Olympics and 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Perhaps, Baron ide Coubertin never imagined such shocking events. But it does not mean mentioned values.
