I think people tell lies because:

they are afraid of what others will think or of what will be found out about
them

telling the truth feels like giving up control for them

they are trying to control a situation and exert influence toward getting the
decisions or reactions they want

the truth can be ‘inconvenient’

they don’t want to disappoint other people

they are worried that the truth might lead other people to reject or shame
them

lies snowball

they might want their lie to be true so badly that their desire and needs
overwhelm their instinct to tell the truth
Lying to others, people try:

to cover up what they did

to get something they desire such as money, status, power

to create a favourable image of themselves

to avoid punishment

protect someone they care about from harm or punishment

to maintain privacy

to avoid embarrassment

to be polite
