A serif transitioning into the modern era

Typography in the eighteenth century was heavily
influenced by handwriting styles, and as such, typefaces
were conventionally designed with a humanist inclination.
Giambattista was heavily influenced by the work of John
Baskerville, whose typefaces made a strong departure from
what was considered the norm at the time. Bodoni was used
in Italian book publications in the eighteenth century.
In the 21st century, Bodoni has been used in advertising,
publications, and logo designs. One of the most notable
uses of the typeface is in the design of the Poster for the
movie, Mama Mia. Additionally, Bodoni was also used
in the design of the classic logo for Calvin Klein.

Bodoni has characteristic features that can be used


to identify it. There is a high contrast between the thick and
thin strokes of the letterforms. Other features are that there
is a vertical axis and the letterforms have abrupt, thin serifs.
Bodoni is classified as a transitional serif typeface. Due to the
style of the typeface, Bodoni became a popular font that
was used in a wide range of typesetting situations. Bodoni
remains a popular typeface used in title fonts and in the
design of logos.
