SECTION D
IV. Answer any ONE of the following in 7-8 sentences 5(2+3)
21. All living things require air. Air is a mixture of many gases like nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide
and water vapour. It also contains dust particles, smoke etc. The major part of air is nitrogen. It does
not support in burning of substances. Carbon dioxide is produced during burning substances and

during respiration in plants and animals. Dust and smoke are produced during burning of fuel. It
contains few gases and fine dust particles which are harmful for health and creates many respiratory
diseases like Asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) , Acute Bronchitis etc.
Oxygen is the essential part of air and for the survival of animals and for combustion.

a. Plants and animals help each other in the exchange of gases in the atmosphere. Explain.
b. With the help of a neat and well labelled diagram show the presence of carbon dioxide in air.
OR
People generally use wood, cow dung cakes, crop residues, kerosene oil, coke or LPG gas to cook
food. For running vehicles, we use petrol or diesel oil. In factories, we use coal or fuel oil or natural
gas. The materials, such as wood, coke, LPG (liquid petroleum gas), petrol, diesel, natural gas have
one property in common, i.e., they produce heat on burning which is then put into different uses. Air
or oxygen which helps in burning is called supporter of combustion.

a. Compare and contrast between respiration and combustion.

b. With the help of a neat and well labelled diagram prove air is necessary for combustion.
