What Is The Standard For Ballast Water Treatment System
What are the ballast water management standards? There are two ballast water management standards
(D-1 and D-2). The D-1 standard requires ships to exchange their ballast water in open seas, away from
coastal areas. Ideally, this means at least 200 nautical miles from land and in water at least 200 metres
deep.
What is D1 method?
D1 – Exchange: Ballast water exchange is based on the principle that organisms and pathogens
contained in ballast water taken on board from coastal waters will not survive when discharged
into deep oceans or open seas, as these waters have different temperatures, salinity and chemical
composition.
The BWM Convention includes two performance standards for the discharge of ballast water: D1 and D2.
The D1 standard concerns ballast water exchange, which must be undertaken within open ocean areas,
>200nm from land and in seas >200m deep. The D2 standard covers approved ballast water treatment
systems.
