TWO KINDS OF FREEDOM


NEGATIVE FREEDOM
-the absence of interference (physical, verbal or
use of coercion
-one is free, in the negative sense, when she does
not experience either forms of coercion.

POSITIVE FREEDOM
-the absence of interference however you can
choose to control.
-a person who is free (positive) has a control or
mastery of herself and so has the strength to do
what is good.
- a person who is free is not allergic to rules and
regulations.

BASIC CONCEPTS OF FREEDOM


1. Practical human actions are always derived from
certain motives.
2. “We always have reasons for doing what we do.”
3. Human actions do not simply happen by chance
or necessity.
4. “Man is condemned to be free.”
5. Freedom is always exercised in a particular
context.

WHAT IS AUTONOMY?
Definition
- came from two Greek terms autos and nomos
-therefore it means that a particular entity has the
capacity to rule itself in accordance to its own laws
-a country’s self governance; a right of a country to
be free from coercion and intervention of other
nations
-one’s ability to choose in accordance with one’s
own motivations
-Autonomy is equivalent to freedom
-To be autonomous is to have the freedom
-We feel free because we can sense that in any
situation, we hold our destiny in our own hands

SUMMARY
-Concept of autonomy shows us that external
situations do not fully control us
-We are always free in the face of any situation
because of our consciousness and self-awareness
-Freedom is dynamic because it is always in
constant conversation with the past, the present
and the future
