Global consumption of MMTF
Introduction:
The global demand for textile fibres is expected to witness a growth of 2.5-
2.7 per cent between 2016 and 2021, primarily driven by increasing
consumption of MMF due to limited cotton production and supply coupled
with other factors such as lower prices of MMF.
The global demand for textile fibres consumption has witnessed a
significant growth in the past three decades, especially that of man-made
fibres (MMF) which grew from 19,000 kilo tonnes (KT) in 1990 to 60,762
KT in 2015, thereby contributing more than 90 per cent of the growth in
the consumption of textile fibres during the period.
Global consumption of MMTF
At present, the global man-made fibre consumption is at the ratio of
72:28, which means man-made fibres account for 72% of the overall
textile fibre conception. The natural fibre consumption globally
remains at just 28%! This is mainly due to the limitation of natural
fibre growth and the demand for versatile fabrics.

Advantages of Man-made Fibres:
Man-made fibres are preferred to natural fibres, as they have
distinctive characteristics like low making cost and high strength. This
has ensured the demand and higher production of man-made fibres in
the textile industry. Here are a few advantages of man-made fibres:
Man-made fibres can be easily washed and retain their original shape
even with excessive use.
They are super elastic, ensuring a versatile use.
They are cheaper to produce and manufacture compared to natural
fibres.

Advantages of Man-made Fibres:
Incorporating dyes and colours are easy as compared to natural
fibres.
They have high tensile strength and can take up heavy things
efficiently.
They have a soft texture and are perfect for regular clothing
purposes.

Factors behind the major demand driver for MMF:
According to the United Nations, the global population is estimated
to reach 8.1 billion by 2025 and is moving up the food chain creating
nearly 35 per cent of the additional demand for food products,
resulting in fierce competition against other crops for arable land.
This increase in population, on the other hand, is expected to shrink
the limited availability of arable and cropland by creating a food crisis
and hence limiting the availability of the arable land and stagnating
cotton production.
Global consumption of MMTF
Factors behind the major demand driver for MMF:
Availability of raw materials for the production of MMF is expected to
be available virtually on an unlimited basis for the next few decades
and will cost significantly less than natural fibres.
One more factor which ensures this unlimited availability is the
recycling of MMF as against that of natural fibres, and the freedom of
using these fibres in research and production to alter properties to
make it suitable for newer applications.

The demand for synthetic fibres in the Middle East and Africa is
expected to grow at the fastest rate due to the growing textiles
industry there along with the large presence of industrial bases in the
region, followed by Asia-Pacific which currently accounts for roughly
69 per cent of the global synthetic fibre demand. The demand for
synthetic fibres in the region is expected to increase at a CAGR of 4.1
per cent between 2015 and 2025 to reach 52,015.0 KT by 2021
primarily driven by growth in domestic consumption, increased
adoption of synthetic fibres in the domestic textiles industry and
increasing demand for synthetic fibres for the industrial applications
in the region.

Type Insights
Polyester: The polyester type segment led the market and accounted
for more than 48.5% share of the global revenue in 2021. The growing
application of polyester in clothing, home furnishing, tire
reinforcement, plastic reinforcement, safety belts, and upholstery is
expected to boost the market growth. The growing fashion trends
coupled with rapid urbanization are expected to provide
opportunities for high-end polyester fibers with high durability, quick-
drying, and easy-to-wash characteristics.

Nylon: Nylon is used to manufacture a variety of apparel and
consumer goods. Nylon fiber is elastic, abrasion-resistant, lustrous,
easy to wash, and low in moisture absorbency. This increases its
application in apparel and upholstery such as shorts, swimwear, track
pants, bedspreads, and draperies. It is also used in technical textiles
for making products such as flak vests, combat uniforms, and
parachutes.

Acrylic: The acrylics segment is anticipated to grow during the
forecast period owing to the wide applications in homeware
products, props and costumes, industrial applications, and knitting
materials. Furthermore, the product is particularly used in apparel
manufacturing to produce sweaters, mittens, and other winter wear
clothing.
Polyolefin fibers: Polyolefin fibers are widely adopted for developing
carpets and rugs owing to their high ductile strength, scratch
resistance, and inertness. It is categorized into two categories—
polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE). Polyolefin is primarily

Eco-friendly MMF:
The materials used for the production and processing of man-made fibres
can leave behind water waste and micro-plastics that can cause havoc for the
ecosystem. Keeping this in mind, there are many eco-friendly man-made
fibres that are sustainable and meet the demands without causing havoc to
the environment. Here are a few examples and their benefits:
TENCEL LYOCELL
Tencel Lyocell is an ultra-soft fabric that is ideal for individuals who have
sensitive skin. The fibre is cellulosic and can be obtained through sustainable
and ecological means from eucalyptus plantations and synthesised from
wood. During manufacturing, this fibre does not require any harmful
chemicals, making the process environmentally safe. It is mostly
manufactured using a closed-loop process, where the solvent and water
used for the processing can be recycled up to 99%.
Global Trends of MMTF
Eco-friendly MMF:
Benefits of Tencel Lyocell:
As eucalyptus only grows on dry land, it is impossible to grow other
crop plants there.
Irrigation water is not required to cultivate the raw material.
The fibre is easy to wash and dye.
It has excellent moisture management.
It grows without any pesticides or insecticides.
It is inherently eco-friendly.
Global Trends of MMTF
Eco-friendly MMF:
Recycled Polyester
At present, polyester fibre is produced from recycled bottles and is
ideal for re-channelling the chemical polyethylene terephthalate, which
is the main chemical component of PET bottles. PET bottles and
polyester both contain these chemicals, and recycling them to create
polyester fabrics uses a lesser energy source and has shown to be
super cost-effective. This process works by depolymerising waste PET
bottles using glycolysis, which yields polyester polyglot. This is then
processed to have superior qualities like impact resistance, scratch
resistance and flexibility, which are finally extruded into yarn.
Global Trends of MMTF
Eco-friendly MMF:
Benefits of Recycled Polyester:
Recycling polyester lowers the environmental impact.
Reduces plastic from landfills.
Prevents the used plastic from ending up in water bodies and
harming marine life.
Reduces the use of virgin petroleum for raw materials.
Global Trends of MMTF
Eco-friendly MMF:
Bamboo Viscose
This is the most popular material used to manufacture clothes these days, as
the fabric feels good on the skin. This fibre is a more sustainable alternative
to polyester and cotton, as it is sourced from plants and trees, like bamboo,
which makes it biodegradable. The viscose fibre can be produced using a
close loop system, in which the harmful chemicals are collected and reused
as opposed to being let out into the environment. As bamboo is one of the
fastest-growing plants in the world, it does not need a lot of pesticides or
chemical fertilisers and is available in ample amounts.
The transformation process of viscose requires the use of certain chemicals
in-order to transform the bamboo pulp into rayon.
