Arts are often used to give remedies to people in distraught, most therapists use art to help their
patients in describing what they feel, to help them convey the words that can't come out of their
mouths. You can express your life experiences through art. We believe that art processes our
feelings and helps us understand our surroundings especially in the middle of the pandemic
where our emotions are really tested. Painting as a form of visual art, helps the audience to
expand their mind and process what the painting conveys through different brush strokes,
canvases, shapes, and color, so that they can better understand the message that the artist is
trying to deliver to them.

In the midst of the pandemic, Yasmin Almonte's painting, "LACE", is one of the visual arts that
helps us feel better just by looking at it. We are dealing with a lot of issues during this pandemic,
and our hands are tied, making it difficult for us to act freely. Everyone has been tied to their
homes, while dealing with various circumstances during this pandemic. This art made us feel
that “we are not alone”, that in a bigger picture, everyone we know are also suffering in this
pandemic and not just us. This reminds us that we should be on this journey together, and help
each other out. This art makes us feel lucky that amidst this pandemic, we are surrounded by
the people that we care about, people that helped us through the hardships that we may face in
life.

"LACE" shows a pair of hands painted in more vibrant colors and appeared to be bound by an
invisible force. The artwork was colored brighter to show that, despite facing dark challenges in
life, there are also positive aspects. This makes us feel like we are not alone and always have
someone to talk to and to be with us. This art makes us feel better throughout the pandemic and
gives us strength when we're feeling down and alone. The arts uplift us because it gives us
hope that even though some people are at their lowest, they still find a way to cope up with their
silent battles, and that we should too.
This painting will make you feel warm just by looking at it. The painting's hue, the way it visually
expresses an emotion that is invisible, and its message are heartbreaking all at once. The
painting helps us get ourselves together, despite the challenges wherein you need to find
someone or instrument to vent some things to feel better. Seeing this painting will give you a
feeling that we are talking with the artist and that you understand each other’s perspectives.

Yasmin Almonte stated that she needs to paint to breathe. This pandemic has suffocated us
emotionally and mentally. We may have thought there was no end to all the problems we were
dealing with. The painting made us realize how beautiful life is; we were just tied up in similar
situations because of the pandemic. We must try to get out of the box and remove the “lace”
that makes us suffer and sad to see more beautiful things in life.

The progress of humanity has been shown through various forms of artistic representations
throughout history. Cave paintings are one of the earliest examples of these artistic
presentations. These paintings show that humans are capable of abstraction, art reproduction,
and communication.

In this modern world, "LACE" by Yasmin Almonte is one of the great paintings from the
Philippines that help convey its message of “being held back” or “being stuck” in a battle of
one’s self against the extreme challenges of life. This art lets the entire world feel and know its
message through the display of colors that represent the emotions of the artist, as she suffered
through depression. With the emotions expressed through the relatively dark and warm colors of
the painting, this can become one of the symbols of how mental health issues affect Philippine
society, and how Filipinos may deal with it.

Yasmin Almonte, through her art, can help shape the younger generation in finding their resolve
through paint brush strokes of wonderful colors. Her expertise and her works can help empower
Filipino women as well, in showcasing their art to the world without the fear of discrimination and
gender inequality.
