of Root Canal 1
Term

Techniques of R.C. Preparation

(a) Apical-coronal:
1 Standardized 2 Step-back 3 Balanced force (Roane)
(b) Coronal-Apical:
1 Crown- down pressureless. 2 Step – down 3 Double-flared. 4 Canal master
(c) Combination (Hybrid tech).
(d) Automated:
1 Engine driven e.g. Profile & Lightspeed 2 Sonic 3 Ultrasonic
(e) Laser aided.

(a) Apical Coronal Techniques

• Instrumentation starts at the apex and go back to coronal portion.

• Disadvantages:
1 Less elimination of microbes and infected dentin.
2 Less penetration of irrigant.
3 More chances of apical blockage.
4 More possibility of extruded debris.
5 Instrument approach apical 1/3 with more strain.
6 More time for preparation.

1- Standarized Technique

• Used in: Narrow canals with Circular cross section.

2- Step-back Technique

1 No. of files 2 File motion 3 Length 4 Irrigation

5 Recapitulation 6 Initial Apical File “AF” 7 Master Apical File “MAF”

8 Complete apical preparation with master apical file #25 9 No. of files
10 File motion 11 Length 12 Irrigation 13 Recapitulation

14 Stepping-Back 3 - 4 sizes larger than MAF 15 Each file is 1mm shorter than the previous one

Coronal Flaring

16 Coronal Flaring with GG drills #1, 2, 3 or H-file

First Term Team Dentawy 47
• Preparation of curved canals:

• Typical sizes for instrumentation:

ª Maxillary anterior teeth #60-80  Mandibular anterior teeth #35-50
 Single canal bicuspids #35-40
 Buccal canals of maxillary molars and mesial canals of mandibular molars with moderate curves. #25-35
 Maxillary molar (palatal canal) #50-60  Severely curved fine canals #20-25
 Severely curved large canals #35-45

3- Balanced Force Tech. (Roane Tech.)

• Flex-R file in clockwise/anticlockwise rotational motion

• Modified tip
• Triangular cross-sec.
• Anti-clockwise effic.
• Apical preparation is termed “Apical control Zone” By carrying the preparation to the radiographic apex.

• Advantages of Balanced force prep:

ª Easier preparation with:
ª less apical transportation.
ª Less extruded debris
ª Less deviation from the original canal curvature.
• Disadvantages:
1 excessive clockwise rotation than 90° .. working load, instrument tip locked into canal wall .. instrument
separation.
2 Large radicular shaping with GG may cause strip perforation.
