Module “Hydrology and Water supply”

Written Test - Hydrology

March 1, 2013

1. Define the following terms

i. Sustainable development

ii. Catchment area

iii. Engineering hydrology

iv. Welting point

v. Fluvial Morphology
...

2. Why is engineering hydrology important for civil engineering? Explain two

examples with your own words. With hydrological data are specifically needed
(for the chosen example)?

3. In a catchment area (AE = 21.35 km²) the mean annual precipitation rate was
measured to 593 mm. Express this as the mean annual volume of water within
the catchment area. If the mean annual evaporation rate is 1,800 mm – what
does that mean for the people living there?

4. Describe a possibility to measure the water level continuously with the help of
a drawing.

5. In an investigation area the infiltration capacity is measured to 5 mm/h. If a

rainfall event causing an infiltration rate of 12 mm/h – what will be the
consequence?

6. Evapotranspiration contains of three different types. Please name and explain

them.

7. The field permeability coefficient of a 1.5 m mighty soil layer is kf = 10-5m/s.

Determine the infiltration rate. How long does it take until the layer is
percolated after a precipitation event? What material the soil is consisting of?

8. What are the main components of the hydrological cycle? Elucidate your data
with a drawing!

9. Ho to measure runoff in a stream with the help of a current meter? Describe

briefly the idea and the necessary steps which need to be done.

10. What are the different fluvial transport components? Explain two practical
examples, where sediment transport affects a usage in water management
practice.
