Taken for the booklet produced by Lionnal Hopkins Christ Church Swansea 1872 -

1972

“Another fine example of the artistic work of Kempe. Its inscription reads. “To the
honoured memory of those who fell in the Great War and in gratitude to Almighty God
for those who returned in Peace. This window is dedicated” (1919). In the bottom left -
hand corner is a small piece of glass brought from Peronne Cathedral in France
(destroyed in 1917). It was brought back and given to the church by Vernon Brown, of
Rodney Street. Please look for it and also the fredaemark of Kempe the artist, the Sheaf
of Corn.

It is worth pointing out at this stage there are two large brass tablets placed on the wall,
near these windows, recording the names of the men of this Parish who fell in 1914 -
1918 War and also the officers and men of the 6th Welsh Regiment who were killed
during those years. The reason they are in this Church is because Christ Church has
always been regarded as the Garrison Church of Swansea.(Probally because of it close
proximity to the Drill Hall in Richardson Street.”

VALIANT HEARTS
6th Welsh Who Fell in the Great War
Swansea Ceremony
“O valiant hearts, who to your glory came.
Throughout dust, of conflict and through battle flame;
Tranquil you be, your knightly virtue proved,
Your memory hallowed in the land you loved.”

Many poignant memories were revived when Major - General

Sir A.A. Montgomery, K.C.M.G., C.B.,G.O.C. 53rd (Welch)
Division T.A, unveiled a memorial tablet at Christ Church
Swansea, on Sunday afternoon in memory of the officers,
Warrant officers, n.c.o.’s and men of the 1-6th (Glam.)
Battalion of the Welch Regiment who fell in the Great War.
IMPRESSIVE SERVICE
A deeply impressive service was held attended by about
Two hundred officers and men of the present battalion, under
The command of Lieut. - Col Green, T.D., and about a hundred
Ex-memebers of the unit. Companies from Cardiff and Maesyeg
Were present under the command of Major Hamond and Capt
James respectively, and officers and men from all the surrounding
Districts were on parade. The battalion, headed by the
British legion band and the ex-members of the battalion, left
The Drill Hall for Christ Church (proceeding through the),
Arriving there at 3.15 p.m.. Amongst the officers present were:
Lieut. Colonel Alex Sinclair, T.D: Lieut. Colonel J. F. Thomas, T.D,:
Major M.B. Williams R.A, Major Alex Sinclair, R.E,Lieut
Trevor Morgan and Capt R.C. Lindsey - Brabazon (adjutant).
CHAPLAINS ADDRESS
Rev. Cannon Watkin Jones, ex-chaplin to the battalion,
gave a brief address form the text “Lest Thou Forget
(Deuteronamy 6 - 12). He said it was a great gift that
They could forget, but there were some memories they
could not let go they were part of the soul.
He would not forget that service he held at the Drill
Hall on the first Sunday after August 4th, 1914
(little did they know what it would all lead to),
When they were all so determined that, if necessary,
They would make the supreme sacrifice for their
beloved country, their homes, and their wives and children.
They could not forget that time or that moment when
they had the order to go and Lord Ninian Stuart gave them
Those words of farewell. They recalled those terrible years
of the war and how the news came that men were falling.
They could not forget that eleventh day of the eleventh
Month when peace was declared. They must never
expect to. It was part of the furniture of their brain.
They ought to swear solemnly in the house of God
That they would dedicate their lives to their country
in peace, that they would do all they could to see
That men got work: to join together as
A GREAT BROTHERHOOD
Those men must not have died in vain
“THE LAST POST”
At the conclusion of the service “The Last Post” and
“Reveille” were sounded. The accompaniment to the
Singing was provided by the battalion band.
The memorial tablet bears the names of
Seven officers and 290 men, that of Lord
Ninian Stuart heading the list.

Swansea. Death reported in SWDP 14 October 1914; DIED ON DUTY, SWANSEA
TERRITOROALS END, INQUIRERY INTO SAD DOCK TRAGEDY. The inquiry into
the circumstances of the death of Owen Owens (17), a member of the 6th Welsh
Regiment, who fell into the South Dock in the early hours of Monday morning, was held
at the Alexandria road Chapel,
Swansea on Tuesday afternoon by Mr Glyn Morris, the deputy Borough Coroner. The
father of the deceased, David Owen said his son was an expert swimmer, only joined the
Territorials a month ago and since the force had been mobilised had not slept at
home .William Allen Hawes, a customs and Exercise Officer. Said he was challenged by
the deceased at 12.15 am. Commonplace remarks were exchanged, and the deceased
resumed his duties. Private J King, (23) of Measeteg Street, Swansea, who was on duty
on the other side of the lock gate to the deceased said the deceased seemed to have
“walked in to the dock .”Witness threw a life belt, but the deceased had disappeared, with
his rifle and ninety rounds of ammunition. Dock constable James gave evidence to
finding the body. The Coroner in summing up, said the deceased must have been
rendered unconscious by a blow from the rifle, which accounted for his silence in falling.
The jury returned a verdict of “ Accidentally drowned “ whilst in service of his King and
Country. Captain Perry who is in charge of the detachment on behalf of the Commanding
Officer of the Swansea defences, expressed his regret at the death of the deceased. He
hoped the public would realise the lad died on duty. A Military funeral would be given to
