What is PULSE ?
• A rhythmical throbbing of the arteries as blood is
propelled through them, typically as felt in the wrists or
neck. (Oxford Dictionary)
•Carotid 30 ms
•Brachial 60 ms
•Femoral 75 ms
•Radial 80 ms
What information to check from
pulse?
• RATE
• Rhythm
• Character (volume or amplitude, force
& tension)
• Comparison of both side
• Detect abnormal pulse
Pulse rate
• Normal 60 – 100 bpm
• >100 bpm → tachycardia
• < 60 bpm → bradycardia
• If regular: count in 15 s x 4
• If fast, slow, irregular : count in 1 minute
• Regularly irregular
• Ventricular bigeminy
Character: Force
• Pulse force or volume is the force or strength of the pulse felt
when palpating.
• The force provides an idea of how hard the heart has to work to
pump blood out of the heart and through the circulatory system.
• The force is recorded using a scale
3+ Full, bounding
2+ Normal/strong
1+ Weak, diminished, thready
0 Absent/non-palpable
• A 1+ force may reflect a decreased stroke volume [ can be seen in
heart failure, heat exhaustion, or hemorrhagic shock etc.]
• A 3+ force may reflect an increased stroke volume and is seen
with exercise, stress, fluid overload and high blood pressure
Volume (amplitude)
Degree of expansion between systole & diastole
Measurement of pulse pressure
