Communication Reflection

How would you describe good/effective communication?

I would describe good communication as clear, compassionate, and concise. Conversations need to be
balanced between the 2 people to be effective. You have to be a an attentive good listener and be able
to exchange information in a way that leaves everyone on the same page and feeling good about the
interaction.

Why and when do we need effective communication?

We need effective communication daily. Effective communication is a key factor in any conversation, not
only is it a good way to communicate, it builds relationships and furthers our connections with one
another.

What are the greatest challenges to good communication?

I believe the greatest challenges to good communication are an inability to listen to the speaker, lack of
interest in the topic, and different opinions and viewpoints which could lead to conflict.

Can culture, gender, nationality or social class have an effect on communication?

Culture, gender, nationality and social class 100% have an effect on communication. In 2023, most
people are very open minded and understanding when it comes to identity, but there is always going to
be someone that will disagree with that way of living. Personally, it does not bother me but I know some
people that it would bother. Especially in North America, white superiority is an extreme problem that
needs to be addressed.

Has the development of the internet caused a change in the way we communicate?(quality, quanity,
style)
With the advancements of technology, slang and abbreviations while communicating has greatly
increased. Conversations nowadays are short, and most of the time meaningless. While texting you
don’t know the emotion and tone of voice behind the text, this leads to misunderstandings and conflict.
