TITLE: Simple Harmonic Motion

AIM: To determine the relationship between the angular frequency and the length
of a pendulum bob
VARIABLES: Controlled: The mass of the bob
Manipulated: The length of the string
Responding: The time taken for the bob to complete an oscillation

HYPOTHESIS: The frequency and vibration of the string would depend on it’s length. If
the string is changed, then it will vibrate with a different frequency. Shorter strings would
have higher frequency and vice versa for longer strings.

APPARATUS & MATERIALS: String, Ruler, Timer, Retort stand, bob

Diagram:
Procedure:
1) Set up the experiment as seen in the diagram g
2) Measure the length of the string to ensure it’s ______ m
3) Displace the pendulum about from its equilibrium position and
let it swing back and forth until it makes ______ complete
oscillations.
4) Using a stopwatch, record the time taken for the _____
oscillations. This would be your t1 value.
5) Restart the experiment and repeat steps 3 and 4 to get your t 2
value.
6) Decrease the length of the pendulum by about _____ m and
repeat the measurements made in the previous steps.
7) Repeat steps 2 – 6 until the pendulum reaches it’s shortest
length
