GALAW PILIPINAS DANCE STEPS ORIGIN

Rigodon Royale

The Rigodon—also called Rigodon de Honor—is a traditional formal dance from the

Philippines that evolved from dances brought to the Pacific islands by Spanish

settlers in the sixteenth century (the Rigodon dance was also said to be popular in

French and Spanish courts). It is a lively dance, formerly popular, for one couple,

characterized by a jumping step and usually in quick duple meter. a piece of music

for this dance or in its rhythm.

An Marol

An Marol is a courtship dance wherein the males try to gain the attention of the

females by waving and offering sampaguita garlands. It originated in Catbalogan,

Samar. The dance was originally a "pasakalyi" (an intermission) on Waray zarzuelas

held during the Likud town fiestas in Catbalogan. "An Marol" literally means "The

White Jasmine" or "Ang Sampaguita". The marol (or marun); Jasminum sambac, is

actually the National Flower of the Philippines

Arnis Strike

Almost all martial arts has strikes and striking techniques, there are many strike

and combination of strikes in martial arts that utilizes parts of the body ranging

from punches, kicks, back fist, knife hand, elbow, and knee among others. It can

start as a single strike then develops to two, three and four combination strikes

until it becomes multiple strikes.

Maglalatik

The Maglalatik is an indigenous dance from the Philippines in which coconut shell
halves that are secured onto the dancer’s hands and on vests upon which are hng

four or six more coconut shell halves. The dancers – all male – perform the dance

by hitting one coconut shell with the other.

Tinikling

This is the most popular and best known of the Philippine dances and is honored as

the Philippine National Dance. Dancers imitate the tikling bird’s legendary grace

and speed by skillfully maneuvering between large bamboo poles. The name

“Tinikling” means “bamboo dance” in English. It is considered as one of the oldest

dances from the Philippines, Tinikling originated in the island of Leyte in the

Visayas. The bird was named “tikling” from which the Tinikling dance got its name.

Lundagan

Lundagan is high jump in which the player runs forward to gain momentum and then

jumps over a horizontal stick. The stick is raised higher in each successive round

until all competitors have failed to get over it.

Sinulog

The Sinulog Festival is a traditional celebration in Cebu City held every third

Sunday of January to honor the Santo Niño (Child Jesus). Basically, the festival is

done by a dance ritual, in which it tells the story of the Filipino people's pagan past

and their acceptance of Christianity.

Lapay

It is a local dance art festival that originated from the graceful movements of

hovering birds known as seagulls or the Lapay, found abundant in Barangay

Bantigue, Masbate. Flocks of lapay seagulls created a marvelous scenery and

inspired the old folks to come up with a local folk dance, that since then has exited

and has become an important aspect of the local culture of the people of Brgy.

Higalaay

The Higalaay Festival (formerly known as Kagay-an Festival, then to Higalaay

Kagay-an Festival in 2014) is a patronal festival held each year in Cagayan De Oro ,

Philippines, every 28th day of August, celebrating the feast day of St. Augustine –

patron saint of the city. Higalaay Festival means "Friendship Festival", which the

word "Higalaay" comes from the Cebuano word "higala" (friend; chum; pal) which

was regarded from what the city of Cagayan de Oro is being tagged, the City of

Golden Friendship.

Kalilang

Kalilang is a Maranaw term for feast, where the concituents of the twenty five

(25) barangays celebrate such feast by preparing their own native foods and

delicacies, putting colorful bunting and flag lets on the street and the most and

highly anticipated one is the showdown playing of kolintang, rituals and

entertainment dances performed and participated by the 25 barangays.

Lupad

Lapay Bantigue, a native dance form, uses the basic step of "lupad," which involves

gracefully flailing your arms and taking a sideways step for 16 counts. After that,

turn to face your spouse and repeat the previous procedure 16 times.
