What is Cervical Cancer?</h2>

<p>Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that occurs in the cells of the cervix — the
lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. Various strains of the human
papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted infection, play a role in causing most
cervical cancer. When exposed to HPV, the body's immune system typically prevents
the virus from doing harm. In a small percentage of people, however, the virus
survives for years, contributing to the process that causes some cervical cells to
become cancer cells. You can reduce your risk of developing cervical cancer by
having screening tests and receiving a vaccine that protects against HPV
infection.</p>

Causes of Cervical Cancer</h2>

<p>Cervical cancer begins when healthy cells in the cervix develop changes
(mutations) in their DNA. A cell's DNA contains the instructions that tell a cell
what to do.
Healthy cells grow and multiply at a set rate, eventually dying at a set time. The
mutations tell the cells to grow and multiply out of control, and they don't die.
The accumulating abnormal cells form a mass (tumor). Cancer cells invade nearby
tissues and can break off from a tumor to spread (metastasize) elsewhere in the
body.</p>

Signs and Symptoms of Cervical Cancer:</h2>

● Blood spots or light bleeding between or following periods. <br>
● Menstrual bleeding that is longer and heavier than usual. <br>
● Bleeding after intercourse, douching, or a pelvic examination. <br>
● Increased vaginal discharge. <br>
● Pain during sexual intercourse. <br>
● Bleeding after menopause. <br>

Stages of Cervical Cancer: </h2>

●Stage 0: Precancerous cells are present.<br>
●Stage 1: Cancer cells have grown from the surface into deeper tissues of the
cervix, and possibly into the uterus and to nearby lymph nodes.<br>
●Stage 2: The cancer has now moved beyond the cervix and uterus, but not as far as
the walls of the pelvis or the lower part of the vagina. It may or may not affect
nearby lymph nodes.<br>
●Stage 3: Cancer cells are present in the lower part of the vagina or the walls of
the pelvis, and it may be blocking the ureters, the tubes that carry urine from the
bladder. It may or may not affect nearby lymph nodes.<br>
●Stage 4: The cancer affects the bladder or rectum and is growing out of the
pelvis. It may or may not affect the lymph nodes. Later in stage 4, it will spread
to distant organs, including the liver, bones, lungs, and lymph nodes.<br>

Preventing Cervical Cancer </h2>

<p>Cervical cancer can often be prevented by having regular screenings with Pap
tests and HPV tests to find any precancers and treat them. It can also be prevented
by receiving the HPV vaccine.
To help prevent cervical cancer, ASCO recommends that girls receive HPV
vaccination. Talk with a health care provider about the appropriate schedule for
vaccination as it may vary based on many factors, including age, gender, and
